What's the next move for a Newbie with Class B per

Hello, to all in the expediting business. May God bless and keep you in perfect peace.

I am new to the forum as for as posting questions, comments etc. I am an empty nester and looking to getting into the expediting industry.

I have been reading on this forum for the past 6 months, going as far back as 2000 in the archives to get a understanding of this business.

My first question is: What's the next move for a Newbie with Class B permit.

Please let me elaborate, What company or O/O will take on a beginner in this industry with just a Class B permit?

I am willing to learn this career from the ground up. I want to be able to get with a Mentor who is willing to teach me the business.

I have looked into the lifestyle this business calls for and I have no problem being away from home for long periods and waiting in truckstops or etc.

I very much would like to hear from the Women Drivers as to the HOW'S, WHO'S, WHEN, WHERE, in getting started.

The Men in Trucking I would appreciate hearing from you also.

Try to be kind to a newbie who just want to get all the advice,suggestions, comments, remarks, from the ones who been there and done that.

Well you could post an ad here under the drivers available section. See if anyone would be willing to take you under thier wing and train you. It's always worth a shot.

You can also look under the team driver wanted ads. Maybe make a few calls and see what you can find. As far as I know Landstar Express America is the only carrier that requires experience for a cargo van or straight truck.

Ms MM: welcome!
I think the answers to your specific questions, about which carriers and owners would be willing to take on a newbie, would be best answered by the carriers & owners themselves. Every major carrier has recruiters, who exist to answer questions from prospective drivers, and to find the owners, you need only look in EO's classified section, under 'Driver wanted'. Posting a 'Driver available' ad is a good idea, too.

There are many fleet owners that will take on someone new. Unfortunately, I am not one of them. I think Leo said it best in another post in that one that has older equipment, a lot of trucks, or maybe a new fleet owner with no or little reputation are the ones that will seek out the new folks.
Nothing wrong with that.
Some may not consider my choice popular, but it is what it is. I am in a position that I only seek the experienced. It is my preference to surround myself with folks that would do the job better than myself. If someone wants to "try it", I stand a 50/50 chance they might not like it. That likely comes with a cost that I have no interest in absorbing. Additionally, since I am a small fleet, it makes little sense to put someone new in a truck that is well over $100,000.
That is really just an issue of risk.
If I ran different older equipment my opinion would be different.
I still advise seeking a fleet owner if new. It is just a matter of finding the one that matches your needs and having realistic expectations.
