What to do???

Hello All,
Hope everyone is good and running great!
I would like to get peoples opinion on this: (it's the weekend, so I have not called the company to voice my opinion, but I will).

Got a packet in the mail from my company I am contracted with. The usual log violation stuff...explaining why I averaged 64.84 miles an hour SPEEDING!.

That's not the problem. Also, in the packet, they included "THEIR" version of logbooks, that are going to be mandatory to use in the coming months.

Here's the problem: No recaps!!! Just totals of Off duty, sleeper, driving and on duty, with totals on the side for each row and a place to total for your 24 hours. A box is there to place a number of off-duty days including today.

In their letter the stated that "using these logbooks will benefit all of us cutting down your time filling them out (their name is pre-printed...wow!) and make auditing them easier for us.

I know this is not visual, but there is no place to RECAP.

Then, you must buy the logs from them at a price of $2.00 each, 3 or more at $1.75 or a year supply at $20.00. They are loose leaf (which I do not prefer. Guess I'll have to buy a binder too....ughhhhhh).

Now, my guess is that I will be doing their logbooks and my own, so I can keep up with my 70 hr/8 day rules and such (guess this info is not important to them???!!!!?!?!). I will be doing 2 logbooks and paying for 2 logbooks.

Seems like I'm going to have to do more paperwork so I can make their jobs easier. My logbooks are always clean and legible. We already pay them an extra $5.00 a week for processing paperwork! You would think the 38% they get from every load we haul would be enough. My logbooks are always clean and legible.

Nope, I am not happy, just wanted to get some opinions on this or to see if I need to look at this at a different angle. Maybe if they had made "their" logbook what it should have been I would not be unhappy.

Thanks in advance for any and all input!

Rather than buying a second set of logs you might want to look into drivers daily log software. In the long run it might be cheaper than buying the second set of logs and it will keep your recap going.

With these new log books, wouldn't the DOT would want to see the recap?

With the drivers daily log software, you have to print out the logs, right now, I don't have a printer in the truck, so it is impossible to print these logs out.

I just feel it is riduclous to fill out 2 logbooks and waste my time and money.

DOT does not require a recap. You can just do that on a sheet of paper to make sure that you are under the 70 hours.

Another option would be to get one of the bound logbooks from a truckstop that has the recap as a separate sheet in the front. Then you could make photocopies of that one sheet. You could also use the spreadsheet in Works or Office or whatever program you have on your computer to create a recap sheet. If you use DDL I think you could just show the recap on the computer screen if anyone required seeing it since it's for your benefit only and not a requirement.

Here is the copy of the logbook. As you can see there is no recap on the side for the 70hr/8 day. This is what I am talking about, not the monthly log totals.
Let me know what you think.
Thanks all!

uhmm never new that. Thought since it was on the logbook Dot would want to see.
Do you guys have to fill-out 2 logbooks also??
Thanks for the input, hope I did not aggravate anyone. just wanted to be sure. I'm still new at this.

Hard enough to keep one log book, I use DDL in addition to my Carrier supplied L/B. It has ways to track income / expences, along with helping me when I am to tired to figure out weather I have some hours to make a pickup.

I don't know why I didn't think of this sooner but since you have to pay for logbooks anyway you could just buy the ones at the truckstop with the recap on them. You'll have to fill in the company information each time which is a nuisance compared to preprinted from the company but that's the tradeoff for having the recap you like. As long as the logs are DOT compliant they can't refuse them I don't think. Doing so would change you from an independent contractor to an employee and they'd be responsible for your SS taxes etc. then.

I know the Fed DOT does not require a recap...But I wonder about individual states,

One time at an Ohio scale house the inspector was sure going over the recap with a fine tooth comb.

He found nothing.

Some companies do require you use their pre=printed logbooks. Like Conway does. They are the scanable kind and they will not accept any others but theirs. Your answer of buying one logbook in a t/s and copying the recap in the front of it sounded l.ike the best and cheapest option. You can take that one logbook to a copy shop or staples or someplace like that and make a lot of copies for about 5 cent a copy.

Sorry but that seems like an awful lot of comotion, just to keep track of seven numbers once a day. When you remove your old log sheet and make up the new, add up your working hours subtract from seventy. Write this number on your forehead backwards. At the end of the next day all you have to do is see how many working hours you have, look in the mirror and see which one's bigger.}>

Excellent advice. Keep it simple.

I'm bald so I could run a second illegal logbook and have room for both recaps on my head.

But if a DOT guy wanted to check your recap you and him would have to to the mens room and he would stand behind you to look into the mirror.

Also I would have to remove my cap to show him my recap and when we were done I would recap the recap.

This looks like the same EGL/SGC form letter that I recieved stating I was speeding and was violating hours of service

Speeding: averaging 68.81 across NE & WY where posted limit is 75 MPH

Hours violation: according to them I drove for 33 hours (yes Thirty
Three Hours)on Feb 16

I downloaded some info from the FMCSA site regarding log book speeds
and remarked about their incompetence and obvious lack of education in a cover letter that I returned along with the uncorrected logs.

It has been 3 weeks and today I was told the logs are fine no corrections or explanations required

Heel4You:I just received the same thing in the mail the other
day, since you won't say who the carrier is i will,it is BOLT
who sent it.I work for an O/O and don't see him kicking out any
money for the log books.
Supposedly it doesn't go into affect until Sept.I guess it is just another way to milk a few more bucks out of your pay.
