We are just about at the end of our 250,000 mile extended warranty on our 2006 Sterling Acterra and we still have 2 problems that no one has been able to fix.

Our motor is the MBE 900 and we have had an ongoing problem with the motor rapping. It does not do it all the time and it does not do it under certain conditions - it just comes and goes. Sometimes the Check Engine light will come on, sometimes it doesn't but we definitely loose power when it starts to rap. If we shut the truck off and let

im not sure whats wrong with your engine, but there is something wrong if you loose power when you here this wrap
most engines if the check engine light comes on will go into a saving mode and you will loose power
take to qualified engine shop, spend the time, but make sure it is fixed before your warranty runs out,or will be out of your pocket

The best service we found for the MBE was the Detroit Diesel shop on the northeast side of Kansas City. Since DD and MBE are mates now you may find better service at a DD shop than a Sterling shop. Good luck.

Since you are sitting close to the warranty being out, I would make sure EVERYTHING is fully documented with your problem. Especially if the same problem reoccurres and your warranty is out. I would still have a full expectation for them to resolve the issue even if you went over the warranty milage, and the problem is not resolved.

Thanks for the replies. Maybe we should try and get over to Kansas City and have them check everything over - it certainly couldn't hurt!

I keep all the paperwork on the truck from each dealer that has worked on the truck and the best one is the work order from NC, they documented right on the paperwork what they were told by Detroit.

Dave, I agree, since this is an ongoing problem, if something should happen, it should still be covered. We are hoping that Detroit will agree with us - when the time comes.

We have run across a few driver's with the same engine but they are not having this problem.

If you go back to November you will notice I posted alot. Alot of was exactly what is happening to you.

When I had less than 100 miles left on my warranty, I noticed it was running rough AGAIN. My diagnosis was correct BAD INJECTORS AGAIN!!!

I called on a Sunday evening at 11pm, explained the sitution and the dealer I was gona go to after I dropped. I also explained I was an Expeditor and needed to take care of the load no matter what or get it towed the rest of the way to keep the Odometer below 250. I was rest assured since I called in with the city and odometer that seeing where I was going would cover my but 300 miles left to go.

Long story short, got it back home 255 on odometer, four bad injectors one crack in the exhaust manifold. Took forever to fix due to trouble shooting and trying to make sure the problem would not come back.

To secure your warranty, document everything. If you have not yet get it into the dealer and explaine whats wrong and let them write it up. Call Sterling customer service and explaine what you wrote here.

KW took care of me, it saved me over 4K that I would have otherwise been out. Being out of service was bad enough, but a 4K bill would have hurt much more.

Good luck, and get to documenting.

We have all the documentation.

We have called Sterling customer service each time the truck has been in the shop and are told the same thing each time: if they cannot pick up anything doing the diagnostic or can duplicate the noise, there is nothing they can do - we just have to wait for it to break down.

We will probably be going home at the end of the month so we plan on taking it back to the dealer there. The mechanic did hear the noise when we had the fuel leak so maybe he will be willing to take another look at it.
