what kind of chains and where do you buy them?

If running just east of the Mississippi do you need metal chains or cables? From what little I've found I presume the cables are not metal. I expect to be far enough south whenever I'm heading back to Texas to not need chains west of the Mississippi. Thanks for any and all advice. Oh, and where's the most economical place to buy them?

I have never had to use them for expediting. There are places out west where you can either buy them or rent them,. I usually don't go out there in the winter months. Too much aggravation.

My philosophy on the subject is: If the weather is so bad that you need chains, then it is time to pull over and take a break. In reference to your question though, you can pick them up at the truck stops.

Chaining up is not a west coast only inconvience. We had autochains on our truck, one company that supplyies tese is Insta-chain. We've used these to get out of dock area's and whenever we where uncomfortable about road conditions. We did not use these to be hero's but to get off the highway to a safe area. When and if you travel out west, once you get past Illinois, the chains are available in Iowa, Nebreska, Wyoming,Colorado. Price does very and generally the closer to California you get the price is higher. Have fun in the snow, and have a safe winter.

Hi. We bought chains (not cables) at the Iowa 80-They were expensive-you have to have them when using I17 in AZ as well as other routes in UT, CO, WA, OR, etc during the winter months. I know of people who were fined at DOT random inspection on I17 in AZ for not having chains on their truck even though the weather did not prompt their usage. They were fined and forced to purchase the cables on site at $500 a pop.

Like the others stated, if weather conditions dictate that we have to use chains we pull over. Although, we have had to chain up just to get off the road before and out of our kid's driveway...they lived on a moutain in Vermont.

Ontario RE: chains ?

Should you come to Ontario (I hate when people just refer to "coming to Canada" it's a very big place) tire chains are illegal to the best of my knowlege.
Studded snow tires were banned in the early 1970's due to the damage they caused to the roads.

BRITISH COLUMBIA though; I believe requires chains in some of the high mountain passes.

A couple of years ago I bought a set of chains at a Pilot in South Dakota. They were about $90.00. I have never put them on,have no intention of learning but as the previous poster said you MUST have them if you run the Western States in the winter.I also feel if you have to put chains on, you should stop.
