What is a Veteran?

Normally this would be a topic for the Loading Dock, but due to the number of veterans we have on this site, I thought it appropriate to post here in the main forum.

I want all our posters, and lurkers, to join us in thanking all the veterans we have here, for their service. We owe them a debt, and a huge thanks.

What is a Veteran?

You can't tell a veteran just by looking.

He is the cop on the beat who spent six months in Saudi Arabia
sweating two gallons a day making sure the armored personnel carriers didn't
run out of fuel.

He is the barroom loudmouth, dumber than five wooden planks, whose
overgrown frat-boy behavior is outweighed a hundred times in the
cosmic scales by four hours of exquisite bravery near the 38th parallel.

She - or he - is the nurse who fought against futility and went to
sleep sobbing every night for two solid years in Da Nang.

He is the POW who went away one person and came back another - or
didn't come back AT ALL.

He is the Quantico drill instructor who has never seen combat - but
has saved countless lives by turning slouchy, no-account rednecks and
gang members into Marines, and teaching them to watch each other's
backs.

He is the parade - riding Legionnaire who pins on his ribbons and
medals with a prosthetic hand.

He is the career quartermaster who watches the ribbons and medals
pass him by.

He is the three anonymous heroes in The Tomb Of The Unknowns, whose
presence at the Arlington National Cemetery must forever preserve
the memory of all the anonymous heroes whose valor dies unrecognized
with them on the battlefield or in the ocean's sunless deep.

He is the old guy bagging groceries at the supermarket - palsied
now and aggravatingly slow - who helped liberate a Nazi death camp and who
wishes all day long that his wife were still alive to hold him when
the nightmares come.

He is an ordinary and yet an extraordinary human being - a person
who offered some of his life's most vital years in the service of his
country, and who sacrificed his ambitions so others would not have to
sacrifice theirs.

He is a soldier and a savior and a sword against the darkness, and
he is nothing more than the finest, greatest testimony on behalf of the finest, greatest nation ever known.

So remember, each time you see someone who has served our country,
just lean over and say "Thank You."

It is the Veteran--

...
It is the VETERAN, not the preacher,
who has given us freedom of religion.
...
It is the VETERAN, not the reporter,
who has given us freedom of the press.
...
It is the VETERAN, not the poet,
who has given us freedom of speech.
...
It is the VETERAN, not the campus organizer,
who has given us freedom to assemble.
...
It is the VETERAN, not the lawyer,
who has given us the right to a fair trial.
...
It is the VETERAN, not the politician,
who has given us the right to vote.
...
It is the VETERAN,
who salutes the flag.
...
It is the VETERAN,
who serves under the flag.
...
and it is the VETERAN, in the end,
who lies under the flag he fought to protect.

"Let us solemnly remember the sacrifices of all those who fought so valiantly, on the seas, in the air, and on foreign shores, to preserve our heritage of freedom, and let us re-consecrate ourselves to the task of promoting an enduring peace so that their efforts shall not have been in vain." -Dwight D. Eisenhower

I am a veteran, did my time is the US Army. This week something occurred to make me ashamed of the Bush Administration who did something which was a slap in the face to all veterans who served our country.

I am refering to the President giving Mohammend Ali the Presidential Freedom Medal. What did Mohammend Ali do to deserve this honor. He did not serve our country when called to do so but avoided the draft and went to prison instead. I believe if his name was still Cassius Clay this medal would never have been awarded, but maybe some dip---- in the White House figured this would be a nice gesture to the Muslim Community, so maybe the Muslim extremists would stop blowing up buildings. Certainly worked this week.

What is a Veteran?

He is my Barber, who served 2 tours of Vietnam in the Army, he's cut my hair for over 25 years now...

He is my High School Wood Shop teacher, who served 2 tours of Vietnam in the Army, actually volunteering for the 2nd tour.

He is my father, who drove truck for 42 years over the road, serving in the Air Force before that... and while on the road as a long distance truck driver, served 27 years in the Air National Guard as a refueler... refueling nearly every type of aircraft in the airforce... serving in Kuwait during Desert Storm.
He retired from both, driving and the Air National Guard in January of 2005.

He is my cousin who served in Desert Storm, in the Marine Corps.

He is my cousin, who is currently serving in Iraq, with the US Army, for the 2nd time.

My Grandfather who served in WWII in the Navy.

A veteran comes in all different forms...

Many truck drivers are Veterans. There are countless OTR drivers who have served in the armed forces at one time or another.
I think it would be nice to see a tribute to the American truck driver who has served their country... somewhere.
We have bronze sculptures of all other kinds of hero's,
why not the American Trucker?

What is a Veteran? Why he or she might be your neighbor, your barber, your dispatcher, the forklift operator that just loaded your truck...
your waiter or waitress, the guy in the garage fixin' your rig?

The next time your in a truckstop, check out the vanity plates and stickers on trucks; look at tattoos and/or hats worn by drivers... you're surrounded by vets. Some have stories never told, some have stories they don't want to tell, regardless of that...
They all share one common thing: all have earned our respect...
and our thanks, for our freedom in America.

Thank You Veterans... I wish you all a Happy Veterans Day.

A veteran is someone that fought in that imaginary WWII war. Tell some of my relatives and friends it was imaginary and didn't happen. That includes the ones that fought and the people that escaped the death camps.
A veteran is someone that comes home mangled, either in heart or body, or both.
Today's veteran is someone who is fighting an unseen enemy. The same enemy that walked among us on our soil.
The unspoken veterans are the family members watching from the sidelines wondering if they are going to get a knock on the door. And, the ones that do get that knock.
A veteran is someone who makes you understand "Under God". Because you never pray more than when someone is on the front lines, or might be, 24/7.
I appreciate the efforts of every enlisted person who will put themselves on the line for me.
Who am I that I deserve so much?
I never take any of you for granted.
I hope a whole lot of veteran's are able to read this, for it means that you made it through and are safe.
I may not know you, but as far as I'm concerned, there are no 'unsung heroes'.
Thank you.

I notice that the older I get, the quicker the lump in my throat forms when I hear the National Anthem. I humbly thank all who have given me the freedom to stand and be proud.
