What is a legal "bump"

What makes a bump a bump?

Was on i96 towards Grand Rapids when I read this sign "bump ahead" now we are in Michigan right? I laughed to myself as I passed over this so called "bump" darn the bridge joints are worse then that!!

So what makes work crews go to the expense of putting up 2 signs "bump ahead" and "bump" ? Does a supervisor go out a determine it needs a sign? Does he have a rule book on what makes a bump signable? Where'd this book of definitions come from? The DMV? Or one can imagine the legislature sitting discussing what the parameters of what a bumb is???
Good Lord we they can burn alot of money away....that they don't have.

In Michigan it is done by committee during MDOT meetings.

See the idea was to take all the complaints from the people who call or write in and determine where the bad spots are, then a road crew (about 10 guys/gals in 5 trucks) goes out to the spot, looks at it and say "yep that's a bump" and reports back to the committee, who in turn assign a project number, a project budget and hand it to the MDOT district for immediate installment of the signage that says its a bump so it looks like they are working on the problem.

Who said these are educated anything’s, they are not - from the governor down, no intelligence.

Bumps in the road are just a reflection of the stupidity of the people of my state. They elect idiots, allow nepotism and cronyism in the state government and think that the state is a 'world class' state because three companies opened up shop and hired 400 people, of which 350 are not from the state. They don't get the tie between incompetence government and a government that puts a state on the move.

Isn't it when you get the other guy's attention on the backstraight and trade paint but don't crash out either car?

RE: What is a legal

What corporate tax incentive?

Are you joking?

I heard from Levins office on this big to do about nothing package he came up with but when you read through it, it reads like an auto company and supplier directory.

There is a conference in Mackanaw, Mackinac Center for economic study puts it on, where all the leaders of the south east Michigan (which now include Windsor for some un-Godly reason) postulate all these ideas to help the struggling economy, but not one of them can put it in action or look at other states. They are like some children of the corn people who live in this fantasy world.

For example - we have the godfather, L Brooks Paterson who owns Oakland county where D-C is saying he wants to put money into Cobo hall in Detroit to expand the auto show but he is sitting on the best piece of tax payer property that could be turned into a comparable venue like Chicago’s McCormick center or other venues that is five times as large as Cobo but no they want to add more taxes to pay for it. Why dump money into Detroit with their mis-managed and corrupt government at our expense? Take the money and use it to reuse the property that was abandoned by the Lions – who should have never been allowed to build a new stadium to begin with. The shame of it is that these idiots sit up there and think of ways of improving Michigan but not one of them can go to Indiana or Ohio and find out why they are still having companies come in while people are leaving our state.

I have a few solutions to solve this stupidity problem and get the state back on track.

The first thing is get rid of the governor and her cronies. That will reduce the budget by a lot alone.

The second thing is get rid or the stupid ads from Jeff Dainels, who cares if this guy builds batteries for NASA, the problem is he didn’t hire a lot of people from Michigan to work there. I would instead hire sales people on commission to get businesses to look at Michigan and if they move, great they get a lot of money (the sales people that is).

The third thing is I would really build up the tourist thing, right now we have nothing – many states make this a selling point to show off their state. Big deal the henry ford, and the automotive history museum where they don’t include all the people that actually did something for the industry. We have no amusement parks, or don’t think we do, we don’t have really good parks or camping like we used to (they are actually talking about selling our parks to pay for the up keep of some stuff), Detroit close the aquarium and killed all the fish (actually I think they grilled them), we have one race track in the state, MIS and we have a few thousand acres in Detroit sitting there doing nothing and it would make a great track but too many people will complain about it so they can still be unemployed but at least they can hear the shootings and dog fights. The point is that we lack a lot in south east Michigan and people there think that they have a lot to do. We lack real good places to eat and lack communities.

The fourth thing is I would restructure the entire income tax system at the same time have a vote to make the state legislator part time – what a waste of money having full time people doing nothing to begin with. Oh I would also yank the water department from Detroit’s hands and make it regional

The fifth thing is I would try to eliminate property tax or at least get the voters to vote on a prop 13 type property tax system. I can tell you that property tax is actually chasing people out of the state, I am one who has my taxes doubled since I bought the house and my vacant land is around $800 a year, which is 8 times the amount I paid when I got the land but the values has gone down a lot.

The Sixth thing is I would allow more ‘no tax’ zones for small and medium businesses, including depressed cities. Not just this enterprise zone where all the mayor’s friends own the property or the governor (in her former capacity) has something to do with the sale of key parcels. I would also make it a point that if a big business wants to move here and get a tax abatement, they have to hire from the state, not outsource for ten years or move – other wise they pay back all the back taxes plus interest.

RE: What is a legal

Greg, are you forgetting something? We do have more than one racetrack in SE Michigan. We on the Eastside like to call it Gratiot.

But anyway, weren't we talking about bumps? I mean all the things that you are talking about are great, but while the people don't matter in the state, said state will continue its ways. Happens across the board, won't change. Maybe Direct Democracy would work. Maybe not.

Oh yeah, before I forget... what is a legal bump? I think they need to rename some bumps in Colorado... to SEVERE UPHILL GRADES AHEAD!!!

"We on the Eastside like to call it Gratiot."

Well that was true one time, but the last time I was out there, it took me 45 minutes to go from Stephens to 696. But the times do change.

Stephens to 696 in 45 minutes? Actually, if that was anytime between 8a and 8p, I'd be inclined to believe it. But when the sun goes down, the entire Eastside major roads network turns into its own little MIS. Gotta love when the idiot in their rice-burning crotch rockets down the street have to gun their motors at 3a to prove that they have one. I'd love to see one of them hit a 'bump.'
