What have I done???

Hi guys:

I like to make spreadsheets. I'm not that good at it but I like to do it.

I'm up-loading this one to have you see what I've done wrong.

First of all I know 300 miles a day doesn't happen at least all the time. I also know that you don't eat $30 of food a day.

BUT, what's wrong with this sheet?

OR...Is it wright?

Let me know please.

Thanks

t.

ps
I'm not sure if it works cause it's a different file name than mine.

I don't have the right software to open that up and since I'm computer retarded it would take me 5 hours to figure out a way how to install it and open it. Sorry.

Looks good I changed the % and it updated right away. meals are $52 on per deim weither cost or not that is the numbers your working with. Can you put in oil, coolant, additives, window wash. To see just what is spent on the road. Profit is such a realtive term when dealing with the irs.

I would wonder why you are getting a 60% split, and paying for maintenance? I am assuming that you are a sub-contractor driving for and O/O. And if this is infact that case, why are you paying for maintenance?

Thanks for looking at it.
What I'm trying to do is figure Rate of Return or Profit.
And yes I shouldn't have Maint. in there if I'm driving for someone else.
Several things are changeable (everything is I guess)
First the "green" .75 is to the truck at the top
Then all the miles run each day and the dead head DH each day.
With a weekly total, monthly total and yearly.
Then with 10 mpg and the changeable price per gal. of gas it figures your cost for fuel. Then below that is the Fuel Surcharge at .12 cpm that works as a minus in this col.
Then insurance and washes and shower and food and motel ect.
With a total of variable cost.
Next is tax, ssa and whats left with net at the end
Up above in the middle is a place to put what your meals cost you each day and motel and a total for a quick view.

If you put in the "real" ppm and work with 100% where the 60% is you could show what the bottom line would be if you own the truck.
If you have a truck payment then you have to put in a line to show that.

I realize that profit is relative when working with the irs but you only work with them 4 time a year and you only get it back once a year. Mean time your running in the red, unless you don't worry about any of that till it's too late.

So My first question is What would a week look like?
You don't do 300 miles everyday. And some days you don't do anything.
Could you give me some numbers to put in there that are representive of a "normal" week. And yes I know there is no normal week, but something.
Next, the 60/40 split is what I've seen many times on here, but it can vary.
DH, I've got it set for 10% of run miles but it can be insurted as just a number also.
Fuel cost is about right for some areas.
FSC, is that close if you get it at all?
I read in another site that $120 is about right for a van or a cube. What do you think, should that change?
DH is just the miles times the cost of fuel at your milage.
Meals, we get to clame $30/ day right?
and a motel can be had for under $50.

So tell me how I can take enough money home after a week to make a payment on my wife's grocery bill.

Or not.

Thanks

t.

Robert:
Yes you can and I will if you would like, and also a line for truck payment.

I also have one that is smaller that is for a driver that dosen't pay for anything except his meals and personnal stuff.

Thank you for sharing, Thornapple. And thank you to others who have shared their spreadsheets too. You are more helpful than you know.

As part of the Business Planning for Successful Expediters series, EO is developing an online business resource center that will include spreadsheet and business plan templates that readers can use free of charge. While such items will not appear until the series is further along, it is helpful now to see what other expediters are doing. It helps me understand what is most commonly done and most used by those who share their work.

The series is published in Expedite NOW magazine and online at:
http://www.expeditenow.com

I have been collecting these spreadheets online from people who share, like Thornapple did here, and on the road as I meet expediters and discuss business practices with them. Always interested in more, I would enjoy hearing from any expediter who wishes to share his or her spreadsheets. You can do so in public as Thornapple did, or by private message to me. Confidentially is promised to those who share in private.

Thornapple, as you continue to put thought into your spreadsheet, you might find it helpful to review the Partnes in Business resource that is written by American Truck Business Services and published by Overdrive magazine. Give special attention to Chapter Five, Profit and Loss Statement.

See: http://www.partners-in-business.com

While that publication is for truckers in general and not expediters in particular, I believe you will still find it to be of good use.

Thanks Phil.
Always nice to be on the good side.

Do you have any numbers for me?

I have several Spreadsheets that I have made up for trucking. I will look at the site you ref. and see if there will be something that I can add to or change.

The reason I need good numbers is I want to get into trucking (especially expediting) and I think one needs to know about all the hidden things that you need to plan for ahead of time so you can make a informed decission.

Thanks for helping.

Thornapple,

As a straight truck driver, any numbers I would provide would not likely be helpful for a van operation. I do not have van numbers from others.

FAMILYEXPDT,

Thanks for sharing that link. I was not aware of that site. Very cool.

Would you mind sending me some different spreadsheets. I am not very good at building them. I do not know if you should post your website address on here or not. My phone number is 270-499-1658.
Thanks,

I would appreciate any spreadsheet you could supply also. I am really interested in entering the numbers that apply to my operation but am not good at building the spreadsheet. Please call at 270-499-1658. By the way I have a D unit.
Thank you,
