What ever happened to common courtesy????

Ok now I'm not big into griping or anything but considering I just got woke up at 5:30 this AM I am not happy. I delivered late last night and pull into the J here in Knoxville (after midnight) only to have a rude awaking at 5:30a by a Panther II straight truck driver pulling in beside me. Now I drive a Sprinter for going on 6yrs and believe me I understand needing to sleep. But if you are going to pull into the (for lack of better words) 4 wheeler side to sleep do US ALL a favor and shut off your truck. You might be able to sleep with that noisy thing running but doesn't mean the rest of us can.

I could understand running it IF it was hot outside but this AM is NOT one of those days. IF I had to guess it's only about 70 and it IS a cool 70 so no need for idling that truck. Please guys in the straight trucks IF you have to pull into the 4-wheeler parking to sleep PLEASE have some courtesy and shut off your truck.

Draco In Knoxville I have always found the TA at the top of the hill to be the quietest one of the 3 truck stops at that exit. You are also away from the diesel fumes coming from the idleing trucks.

Get over it Draco, you are in a truck stop.Even if you are on the car(RV)side,it's still a truck stop.If you can't sleep because of a running truck engine then you oviously have chosen the wrong profession.

There isn't any common courtesy anymore. I'm with you, when it's 70 sunny or otherwise there is absolutely no reason to idle a truck. If you need to run a truck to keep batteries charged then I suggest you add to or replace them. Or, whatever other reason you have to idle under those weather circumstances, the reasons (excuse) don't exist. Sorry. However, those of you that travel to a truck stop to rest, and expect good rest, i'll have some of whatever you're smoking.

hehe Took the words right out of my keyboard. If the rumbling of a truck engine keeps you awake, then trucking might not be for you.

OK DRACO. I guess you found out about common courtesy. Most of the people here think you are the one who is wrong. I don't think that way but the "real truck drivers" seam to think so.

Yes we do.And besides, most people who have been at this awhile know where to park to get completely away from those offensive trucks and it isn't in the front lots of flying j's.

I had to deal with ignorant drivers a lot.

Example; I am sitting at a pilot in Georgia getting my Coffee fixed up and with signs all over the place, no bobtails no straight or box trucks, I get blocked in by an idiot in a 18 foot straight truck. He wedged his truck in the spot between me and another van at an angle at my expense. I won't say what I did, but he will think again about pulling into an area and blocking in people.

I find the more that the industry screams about a driver shortage, the more recuirting of idiots take place, the more courtisy goes away. One may think that there are all professional drivers out there, but the public will only see the one or two who are ignorant and rude to ruin it for all.

So you're saying you didn't have the ***** to approach this "ignorant" driver and discuss the situation with him, instead you chose to take the more "intelligent" approach and do something illegal to his truck that might jeprodize his and even YOUR safety on down the road.

Now THAT'S professional!!!!

When I was a so called Fleet owner I bought one of my trucks from a PantherII driver who was only in it three weeks because of this exact problem. He could not sleep.

Okay let me say this as a Straight truck driver. We have our problems as well. Most of the time the big trucks do not want us on that side and the Vans and Sprinters don't want us on that side and creates problems for us. We are stuck between the two of you and can not make either happy. We have to try our best to deal with it.

I agree with you all on this subject decent folks are far and few between in this business anymore. I do at times run my truck for battery purpose. If I set for a long period of time watching TV, using computer, running refrigerator and so on, I need to charge up a little bit. I turn my truck off every chance I get to save on hours on engine, save fuel and not to disturb others. But I do run it when I have too.

I can normally sleep pretty well about anywhere and I will say if I were in a Sprinter I have a list a mile long of where I would go park for sleep before I picked a truck stop.

I saw a guy here in Sharonville, Ohio in a big parking lot with his back doors open, side door craked open and both front windows down and I watched him move all over a shopping mall type lot tryingto get silence. I think he should have shut some doors or maybe tried a hotel. It was very hot that week.

No one will win this fight as a Pilot once said to me upon approach to landing and I was a bit miffed about the fact we were splitting two hot air ballons to land, "Everybodies got to be somewhere", and he put it down with out complaint. I learned to live by that saying in my truck. It works for parking, driving and sleeping.

Good luck out there

X , you can be a rather sanctimonious, pious, and rather self-righteous individual sometimes. I don’t see how you can possible know what another mans truck has or needs, or what is running or not running. You know there are several ways to make a point, but you seem to think that you are one of the few who knows how to get the job done. Well your not. There are a few of us that can accomplish profitability, without parking within a quarter of a mile from our drop, idle the truck to be able to sleep the night thru without jumping out of bed ever few hours to run the truck to bring the batteries back to a comfortable level. Try to keep the rancor toned down.

You give some good tips and sound advice most of the time, but your delivery sure seems to make you sound a little goofy sometimes.

I don't need an excuse to run MY truck. Not your truck MY truck. Next you will say that the guy with his generator should not run it unless, oh I don't know what would be okay with you X Get off you high horse and join the regular people.

Okay lets hear it from the gallery.

To run ones truck makes them "ignorant", " idiot" , Lacking in "courtisy" "rude". "ruin it for all" but you won't say what lesson you taught him. Is it me or did everybody wake up with a little pi$$ and viniger in their system this morning?

Yes I think the stars aligned right that everyone is full of it today.

Well running a truck does not bother me but when some can't park (take up two spaces) and doing things that are plain rude. It is like the idiots who park their car(or pickup trucks) at an angle taking up two spots - just plain rude.

Like what happened a few months ago had a great spot in an almost empty lot and sat enjoying a good breeze off the ocean. I figured that I didn't have to run my truck and enjoy an insect free breezy day while waiting for a load. This is in a great big (I mean big) lot with lots of parking spaces wiht maybe three trucks in the entire lot. Here comes a tractor with a small trailer into the lot. What does this tractor driving a**hole do? he parks right next to me not only blocking the breeze but also running the high idle up to give me a lot of fumes. There was absolutly no reason for this idiot to park there and less of a reason for him to run the truck at high idle. I won't post what I did to him but needless to say it was really nasty and I have no regret.

See to me we all work doing the same thing and I try to do what I think is right - like if I am occupying a spot and a truck needs one, I usually move to help them but it takes only a few to make all of us look the same.

Am I the only one who slept better in an idling truck? OK, I know now with generators, etc, it's not the correct thing to do if you have alternatives.. but...

When I was in a truck, that was the best sleep I ever had! I personally can't sleep when it's quiet. Plus, the vibration of the truck was relaxing when I was tired. When I switched to a van it took FOREVER for me to learn to sleep. Like Draco said, every little noise woke me up.

Even now, I have to have 'white noise', but I accomplish that with a fan, radio, whatever.

I just wondered if I'm the only one who found the sound of trucks idling relaxing?

Yeah, I know I'm wierd, my kid tells me all the time..LOL

I sleep better with my truck running, it blocks out a lot of the noise from van drivers coughing.

Oh by the way have only parked twice in the front lot.}>

Greg334, I m looking at 2 posts on this thread where you claim to have done something to other people's trucks, without their knowlege
as revenge for either parking or idling to your disliking.
Buddy Ill tell you something, one of these days you re going to be messing around w/ sombody 's truck out there and truck fumes and/or idle noise is gonna be way way down on your list of problems.

Thanks for the warning, I know what you are saying. I am not a tough and rough trucker, just a lonely van owner who has been around the block.

Idling noise don't bother me, not much does.
