What do you like most about expediting??

I think this subject has probably come up a few times before...There are a lot of things to like about expediting. Perhaps for you it is the freedom. Maybe it's that you get to see parts of our great country that you never would have otherwise. Or is it the excitement of finding out what you will be hauling next?

My wife and I are pretty typical in that we are empty nesters and are both on our second career.

We started driving ten or twelve years ago and drove 18-wheelers. Most were reefers.

Near the top of my list of what I like most about expediting is that most of the time the people to whom you are delivering the freight are happy to see you (yes, I said MOST of the time). They will usually get the freight right off the truck.

For those of you who have never driven an 18-wheeler and perhaps delivered at a grocery warehouse, it goes something like this:

You get to your delivery time two hours early and line up with the trucks that are already there. At the time you were supposed to deliver the guard shows up and you sign in. You find out that ALL these trucks have the same appointment time. You are instructed to listen to channel whatever on the CB and they will call you when they have a door for you. You cannot sleep because you may miss the call with your dock number and someone else will replace you.

When you finally get a door and back in, you are expected to help unload and "break down" the load or hire a lumper to do it.

For those of you who started your trucking experience in expediting, you are very fortunate.

I ENJOY DELIVERING A LOAD WHERE PEOPLE ARE HAPPY TO SEE ME AND GET THE PRODUCT!!! I know, you can give many examples where that is not true but most of the time it is.

Now, What do YOU like most??

:D :D :D :D :D

Oh, by the way, we now drive a D unit and we can get into lots of places we couldn't get into before....Like Cracker Barrel, for instance.. :9 :9 :9

Good post Cliffn,
I also came in from a TL operation and sometimes I take for granted my current station in life..
Even if I had to sit now I get detention after the 1st hour and that is the way it should be..
I really like my Outback and Johnny Corinos and missed them in my big truck.
I guess the long and short is the quality of life we enjoy.

I agree! Most consignees are happy to see me. But I thought it had to do with my charming personality and good looks.

But seriously folks....

I enjoy expediting because every day is something different. A different shipper, freight, time, location etc. And this coming from a person who has been accused of having difficulty dealing with change. Oh well!

My friends in the "real trucking world" say it must be great working when you want. My reply is that it is great to work when I don't want. There have been way to many times that I have wanted or needed to work but there were no loads. Such is the life! But as long as I can scratch out a living I will continue to be an expediter. Wow, just what the corporate braintrust wants to hear. How un-Moot-like of me. Oh well again!

I guess if I wasn't an expediter I'd like to be a billionaire with a bad toupee and a television show. Not really! I just like being me, the guy with that funny thing on top of his van.

What I like?

I like the ablility to sleep (don't tell my wife). I mean I can no longer get a restful night's sleep at home. As much as I love being at home, it is sooooo tempting to go to sleep in the truck with my nice air matteress and no cats jumping on me. The cats are not as bad as the matteress.

In addition to this, I just like to drive and travel. Being in St Louis one day and Chicago the next then to Indy.

Moot you said; 'I just like being me, the guy with that funny thing on top of his van.'

What funny thing?

Are you the one with the big bug on his van?

Greg, the funny thing on Moot's van is pictured in the "Your other ride thread". I didn't post a photo of my other ride, because the only photo of me riding the Big Wheel is from when I took a corner too fast & fell off - it's embarrassing.
What I like about expediting is that I can sleep all day, and stay up all night, listening to great music, and nobody thinks I'm lazy when I do. For this, I gave up housework, cooking,& punching a time clock, but hey - everything's a tradeoff, right? :+

Moot,
I figured that would be a good guess.

I saw what you have thanks to Cheri, do they cuase a lot of noise while driving?

Only if I roll it! I put a twist in the straps so they don't vibrate with the wind.

I also know about grocery warehouses, first 10 yrs driving TL. I would say what I like best is the uniqueness of the freight. Yes, that they are happy to see you, and often suprised your "on time". I also like that I can refuse loads if choose, go home when I want, etc. I can't believe the difference in the way your treated by a carrier when your an O/O as opposed to a driver/employee.

not having to punch a time clock or have a supervisor looking over your shoulder; not getting extra work piled on you because someone else quit and the company thinks you can take up the slack; making as much money as you want depending on how hard you're willing to work (as opposed to that 2% raise each year; but most of all i like expediting because i've been able to see all the places we used to just drive past in a semi. we've been to the grand canyon, niagara falls, cape hatteras, every beach we can get to, lovely parks, mountains, whitewater rivers, exhiliratingly high bridges, scrumptious restaurants, stopped for moose (in the road), seen numerous elk and wildlife galore, antique malls...taking time to smell the roses and still make a living. made friends with some great people and seen some that have been, well lets say rather "interesting". i love having the freedom expediting offers!!

Hi

Moot wouldn't it be better if you mounted another one on top. That way on snow covered roads you could use them as ski's.Look at the fuel savings.

We like all of the things you listed but most of all we like the money. If we were not doing better in expediting than we did in our previous careers, we would return to them. Fortunately, we are doing better so we get to enjoy the other things you mention too.

what I like about expedite, most of the time the shippers and receivers are happy we are there, and the big plus,i dont have to work 7 days a week to make a living
I did a food warehouse, might have been last year, was asked to sort and stack,so I made that phone call to see what the pay would be for me doing the work, fed ex called receiver, gave them the charges, and you could hear the foreman screaming about the charges all over the place, needless to say,my 24 skids were off truck and I was out of there with the we wont be seeing you again, guess what, who cares, sure costs alot when someone needs you and no I wasnt the one unloading.
I've got many stories, guess a book is in order, I'm just to lazy to write it,but who knows, might even turn it into a movie, yep a comedy.
well happy trails guys and gals,I'm going back to bed, cant deliver til monday,so I'm on paid vacation
