It will depend the company you are leased to, definitely. Some carriers get more or less loads out of Houston. I'm with Panther. If it were me (and it has been) I'd stay put in Houston if I were #1 or #2 on the board. If I were #3 or lower, and there were no other vans at all in San Antonio, I'd go there. If there were no other vans in Laredo, I'd go there. Otherwise, I'd head straight for Dallas.
Recently I was #3 in Houston, where we get about a load a day out of there. But you can also sit at #1 for 3 or 4 days. I went straight to Dallas, where I was #7 on the board, and we (currently) get about 2 1/2 loads a day out of there. Very next day, Friday, I got a load that, apparently, no one else wanted. 650 miles overnight to El Paso, delivering on Saturday morning.
If I turned that one down, I'd in the same place I was, at the bottom of the Dallas board, and Tuesday or Wednesday before I get out, probably. If I take the load to El Paso and I'm #1 on the board there, it's still probably Tuesday or Wednesday before I get a load out. If I drop off and I'm #2 or #3 I'm not waiting in EL Paso, I'm headed right back to Dallas, where it'll be Tuesday or Wednesday before I get out of there. If I deadhead back over the weekend I'm out $75 for fuel, but I've also had a 650 miles run that I wouldn't have otherwise had.
Took the load, had one driver laugh at me for taking a load to El Paso from Dallas on a weekend, I delivered Saturday morning, then later Saturday night I got a load from EL Paso to Toronto, Ontario. I wonder what his next load was?
