Our Governor in Michigan signed into law a new PRO-HUNTING law that takes affect now. It gives the DNR the power to run our hunting and fishing solely based on sound science and takes away the power from the goof balls like PETA and The American Humane Society and other sleaze like them.

It even gives them the power to establish hunting seasons, taking it OUT of the hands of Detroit politicians!

A LOT of hard work went into this bill and, despite a blitz from out of state anti-gun and anti-hunting dorks, WE PREVAILED!!

We have to keep plugging away. There is much more work to be done to insure that Michigan retains is diverse wildlife populations and our outdoor traditions.

Today, Governor Rick Snyder (R) signed into law an important hunting reform that will help preserve Michigan’s rich hunting heritage for generations to come. Senate Bill 288, introduced by state Senator Tom Casperson (R-38), passed in the state Senate by a 25 to 11 vote on April 25 and was approved in the state House by a 72 to 38 vote on May 2. SB 288, which took immediate effect, will improve the scientific management of wildlife and ensure that hunting rules and regulations are based on verifiable biological evidence – not a political agenda.

Anti-hunting extremists bombarded Governor Snyder for weeks urging him to veto SB 288 despite its overwhelming approval in the state legislature. Thanks to your calls and e-mails, Governor Snyder sided with Michigan’s hundreds of thousands of hunters rather than a radical, yet vocal, minority.

In addition to other small technical fixes, Senate Bill 288 will make the following pro-hunting improvements:

  • Grant the Natural Resources Commission the authority to add species to the game list and establish hunting seasons while retaining the Legislature’s authority to add and remove species from the list;
  • Authorize the Natural Resources Commission to regulate fishing and the species of fish taken as they regulate the taking of all other game;
  • Expand hunting opportunities for members of the U.S. military;
  • Empower the Department of Natural Resources to develop a number of programs for the scientific management of fish and game animals such as hunter education, outreach and research related to hunting, fishing, game animals, predators and prey. This will include hunter/angler recruitment and retention and wildlife population surveys.
Since the scientific management of wildlife in Michigan results in such numerous advantages, it is no surprise that the state legislature and Governor Snyder have chosen to direct the management of wildlife in this way. This common sense approach will ensure that hunters in Michigan will continue to enjoy the state’s hunting heritage for generations to come.

WELL, get together a big enough group to fight it! We have been doing EXACTLY that and winning! Be VERY careful about what "environmentalists" and the "FREEP" say as well, they are opposed to just about everything that we have been fighting for, for a VERY long time. They are just an extension of the unions and blatant supporters of Obama and the like. I don't trust 'em.

This all could be true, however, I for one, do not want to see oil tankers on the great lakes.

Well, I have mixed feelings. We all want cheaper fuel. We all want domestic production. NO ONE wants it in THEIR back yard. It just don't work out. Something has to give. We could sure use the jobs.

Canada has unmarked oil wells, JUST under the surface on Lake Erie.(some are only about 3' under the water right now) SO FAR, nothing has happened. I know the oil is there. Michigan wants to drill so the wells are on shore, I think that is better than unmarked well heads. Time will tell.

When I saw this I thought Joe was hallucinating about his Red Wings.

Let's see. They are not MY Red Wings. Mike Ilitch owns them. I can assure you if I had enough money that I owned the Wings I would NOT be in this truck! Right now I would be out on the Straights of Detroit, The Detroit River for those who flunked geography, fishing for walleye right now.

As to how they are doing. I don't think they are doing all that bad for a team that often has 5 rookies on the ice at the same time. They are, except for one game, holding their own against a very good Ducks team. I am really looking forward to next season. I like all the young talent they have and IF they are all healthy they will do well next year.

Running the state like a business would allow such a thing in my view not stop it. People want pillars everywhere but their backyard that's part of the problem. If you think about it what the governer did by signing the law los spoke of is using the same sound judgement it would take to allow oil. I realize its a touchy subject but everywhere in America is someone's backyard and that is part of the problem.

The DNR in Michigan is responsible for oil and all natural resources. The bill in question ONLY addresses wildlife and the wildlife division.

Any movement on oil and gas development will take place in a different law.

I see a need to drill. I see an need to insure that it is done in such a manner as to enhance the environment instead of harming it. It can be done.

I realize what the dnr does i was simply making a comparison between the two issues.

I did not know if you knew how the DNR in Michigan was set up. All states are different. Using PA as an example. They have a Game Commission, A Fish Commission, A Forestry department and ANOTHER department that handles oil, gas, mining etc.

The comparison is a good one.
