waves freeze when hitting shore of Newfoundland

This old Ice Breaker sailor has seen similar occurrences in Alaska where sheet ice, covering a harbor or bay, is wind driven onto the shore. It breaks up in a manner just like that youtube example. Waves don't freeze in mid-air, but it sure looks like they do.

I figured it must be something like that because if it was cold enough to freeze that way the people would all be frozen stiff where they stood. I just copied the title when I copied the link. It was pretty cool but not sure I'd want to be there to see it in person. I'm too much a Texan for that kind of cold.

Terry,

Were you stationed up there ? Kodiak ?

I had a friend that I went to highschool with, that was stationed on Kodiak for awhile, as well as in Oregon somewhere before he retired.

I spent some time up there on a factory trawler (the Browns Point, Golden Age Fisheries) ...... incredible scenery .... remember being out on deck on a sunny day when we weren't fishing while we cruised past Unimak .... with a snow-covered Shishaldin smoking away ..... what a sight !

Alaska has got to be one of the most beautiful places in the world.

Four years out of Kodiak. We moored in Old Womans Bay, around the corner from Kodiak Harbor. Spent a lot of time in and out of the aleutians, the Bering Sea and a few times up and down the Inland Passage. I concur on the incredible scenery; we had the snow capped Barometer Mountain out of the living room window and the ocean view from the dining room. Best place we've ever lived.

Enjoyed watching video.

With the camera fixed on the shed I was waiting for it to be crushed by the surging ice.

I was stationed on the carrier USS Yorktown CVS-10 when the USS Pueblo AGER-2 was seized by North Korea on January 23, 1968 we were 2 days from our home port of Long Beach, California after spending 9 months on exercises off Viet-Nam. We could see the mustard colored haze hovering over the LA area. We were ordered to Sea of Japan in support of task force being formed which included our first nuclear powered aircraft carrier USS Enterprise CVN-65.

It was so cold they had to use steam jetted from hoses, shovels and chipping tools to break up the build up of ice on the flight deck and especially the catapult area. The ice was a result of the sea spray coming over the bow of the ship.

When the ship would turn into to the wind for flight operations the spray would increase tremendously and those guys using the steam hoses had to be quite mindful of the jet intakes and propellers. Glad that wasn’t my assigned duty station.

At times we would stand down from flight ops and the snow forts would be built on the flight deck and some really good snow ball fights were had. Boys will be boys.

I’ve forgotten how many weeks we were attached to task group but those airdales had to keep the flight deck clear of ice/snow build up 24/7. They certainly earned their pay during that operation. Brrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr

Leave it to an old sailor to take the fun out of a video, no wonder we kept you guys along the coast.:D

We made sure those nuclear powered sampans didn’t bring harm to you folks in country.

Plus we tried to visit every port of call in an effort to set the standard for future visits from our armed forces. It was a tough task to complete but we gave it our best.

I would have added icons but as yet I haven't figured out how to do that.

.....and let that vid be a primer in bad video technique. stop the ceaseless panning(thats right and left) find a point and center on it. if you really need to pan then pull back your lens(back zoom) and pan slowly. then slowly zoom into an INTERESTING subject. since the ice is white you need a little time for the white balance to catch up with the picture. don't pan into people standing around or parked cars either. this is motion being captured.
