The DNR says its time to rethink our seasons..Every five years I guess?? I dont remeber getting this in past years but that dont mean I didnt miss it. I get a survey most years,,just dont remeber this one.
As close as I can see they are asking if we want to split up our zones and change dates..
My vote is going to keep everything the same other then maybe being able to hunt Geese and Ducks at the same time. (Section 6 item O)
I know we are limited to # of hunting days thru the year but I also would like to see a few more days for the Late duck season without taking away from regular season..When weather doesnt push em down early the late season could come into play.
Section 6 is a lil confusing I had to read it many times.

I have not yet been home to see it.

Seasons are based on the Federal/Canadian surveys of the nesting areas each spring. The Feds do not set State seasons, just the maximum days for seasons in each flyway. Same for bag limits. States can do as they please within limits. There is no way to increase the number of days at one end without taking them off the other.

It is not easy to set these seasons. You should try to go to the meeting one year, VERY interesting. They are open to the public. I went to one in PA when I lived there. Learned a LOT.

The ducks have been coming down later every year for several years now. The last two years the bulk of the divers did not show until well past the close of the season. IF this trend continues they may have to slide the season later into the year. At least in the area around Lake Erie.

I agree flight birds seem to be showing up later every year..
All the years I been doing this I guess I never picked up on the fact that the state has option to adjust the season dates every 5 years..I dont know how I missed that??

Speaking of late birds..Seems this would have been a good season for the late goose season..The last few days at home we have been seeing wave after wave heading toward the south..Some really nice groups. I never got out tho :(

Some day I would like to introduce you to my biologist friend(s). Talking with them can be VERY interesting. It is fun to learn from the horses mouth so to speak.

I have been approached by more biologists while hunting and fishing then I have been approached by the DNR. Intresting ppl for sure. Never had a proplem with any of them. St. Joe Peir is the hot spot for them. No hassles out of at all..

My cousins wife is a long time biologist with the Feds and not the DNR here in Mich. She tagged along with us one opening morning and we spend most of that day trying to get her to stop walking around the pond looking at and pointing out all the different life living in it..At one point she was telling us we shouldnt be walking in some areas,, So we told her to tell the dead ducks to come to us..
Her main job it seems something along the lines of fish and plant life??? I know for sure she does alot of the shock treatments to count fish.

A lot of those biologists are DNR employees. All the ones I know are.

She is Fish and Wildlife..Federal Employee.
I thought DNR was State employees?? For sure she does not work for Mich DNR.
She gets the chance to bid on jobs as they come open all around the country I think. And does work out of state at times.
Any I have run across checking game and collecting fish scales here in Mich have been Mich DNR.

Yeah, I was speaking of the 'others' you run into all of the time. There is so much going on out there. A lot of good work.

As a Kid I hunting with my Dad And older brothers I kinda always wanted a job working with the DNR.
As time went by and I got older I realized these guys have to work when we are out hunting and that kinda steered my thinking away from that field of work..I always thought they knew of the best places to go,,But soon learned we got out more then some of them did.
There are a lot of Jobs and different types of work involving the DNR. To bad so many of them are in offices (not in the feild) clogging up the system and having their hands tied by the states, feds, local regulations etc. etc.
