Be careful in the Phoenix area for the next 4 hours or so. The weather is BAD. Severe thunderstorms all over the area along with a pretty bad sand storm. Very high winds and dust covering Scottsdale right now. We just had our truck washed today too.

Layout, you better not worry about Phoenix but maybe your house - we had some nasty weather go through there this afternoon with hail and high winds.

Well, my wife and I are HERE, in Scottsdale and it is bad HERE too. If I lose my house to weather I would most likely come out ahead. I would miss some personal items but not the house. It is no longer worth it. I really am only concerned with our safety.

I take it you and yours made it through that mess there safely?

Photos of that dust storm, also known as a haboob, can be seen here. That is just an amazing phenomonon.

Layout, what did you and others do? If your schedule required you to drive in that dust, would you or, would it be better to protect your equipment by staying put? After the storm passes, how much dust is left behind? How much continues to get kicked back up into the air by traffic?

We were lucky. We were stopped already. I would have stopped if it got bad enough. We are holed up in in motel. I saw no damage to my truck or much dust laying around. We pick up later today.

I saw that storm on television this morning, it looked like a scene from the movie "the mummy" where the mummy blows sand and tried to knock that plane out of the sky! I bet some dumb 4-wheelers plowed right into the storm at highway speeds! Some things never change on the road!

We got caught on in one a couple years ago. We were driving when that one it. Visibility was almost nothing. Yes, there were drivers of all kinds, 18 wheelers, straight trucks an 4 wheelers driving like idiots.

It got to be even MORE fun when the rain mixed into the sand storm, it started to rain big globs of red gooey mud. What FUN!!

Been in those dust storms in Saudi Arabia that were so bad that they actually left a sand drift on the living room floor after it blew thru a leaky old sliding door. Nasty stuff.
