Was this a scam?

While sitting at the FJ in Tulsa Ok the other day a strange thing happened.

A nice clean cut young man rode up on a motorcycle. He inquired what the wheight of my truck was.I told him,and he began to explain why he asked. He said he was in the Marines(not in uniform). He said he had just, turned in a miiltary truck he had been driving. He said he had failed to get a weight reciept. He wondered if I would go over the scales and give him the weight slip.I could see there might be a problem with truck numbers, party to fraud etc.Of course I turned him down.

What do you think? Would you have helped this guy get out of a jam?

probably not a scam. When military people move they want to know the weight of the moving truck loaded. I am not sure why, but I have ran in to a few military guys weighing ryders and budget trucks before.

I can't imagine what that was all about.. I never had to scale a military truck and never required T/T that reported to me in my last assignment to do so either. Mainly 'cause the military trucks are exempt from state regulations related to weight, size, etc.

If he was involved in a do-it-yourself (DITY) move, he would have weighed before moving to his new location, if required, not after the trip is over.

I would venture a guess he neither had a Marine ID, nor a legit reason for wanting a scale ticket that likely wouldn't come close to matching his "military vehicle" weight

We too have run across mils weighing vehicles, and the only way we knew it was the scale lady thought we were mil also by mistake. The vehicles were civilian and they were not typical spit and polish, high and tight looking personnel.

I guess the real scam indicator might of been if he had openly offered to pay the weigh fee up front.

I was listening to the Truckers Network for about 10 minutes the other day when they were discussing all the scams on the road, selling gas, tires, parts etc. Unbelievable!

Ya just never know!

in the military, when you move you are given the option of doing a dity move...usually the military pays you by the mile and the weight..by using your weight ticket..he can show his weight as possibly being more then his actually was...therefore making more money..for his move...usually you rent a uhaul truck or ryder..get a before weight and a loaded weight...ive heard of solders filling water bed bladders..to increase there weight..it usually cost the military about half of what it would cost for option #2 contracting the moving expenses out to a moving company.....

Very few drivers get away with selling fuel . The owners keep a close watch on fuel costs . If one driver has a much lower mpg than drivers in identical trucks he's either selling fuel or has serious mechanical problems .

I used to work with a guy who sold some, then told the boss it was stolen while he slept. He only did it twice and got away with it. He had a variety of scams.

I met a guy in Des Moines IA once who had a private job that checked out differnt drivers and their driving habits. He said he had caught several local guys who had terrible mileage no matter what truck they drove. Of course they were selling the fuel off,one even went to jail for 30 days.
