Wanna Carpet Your Freightliner?

I was in Target the other night and saw a gray utility rug runner in a 2 foot by 8 foot roll. The carpet had a backside that was sort of non-slip. I thought it looked about the size of the front floorboard on my FL-80. I thought that I might be able to get away with making two cuts in the carpet to accomodate the center console and cut an opening for the gear shift. The main objective was to reduce the road noise a little.

When I got it out to the truck, it fit almost perfectly. I cut the rug in two places to accomodate the center console and folded the excess from the console underneath so that there are two layers of carpet directly over the transmission. I made several slits for the gear shift so that the gear shift boot has plenty of room to move around while shifting. I got my torx screwdriver and removed the plastic edges on the outside of each floorboard, tucked the carpet under the edges and screwed them back down (no trimming required, it fit perfectly). It looks REALLY good. It doesn't slide around at all and it muffles the road noise A LOT.

I think the carpet runner cost around $10.

I'm planning to go to a carpet outlet and have them cut a remnant to measure for my new truck. If it turns out to be ridiculously too expensive I'll look into this. I have a walmart mat in the current truck sleeper area that is about the right size but it has creases from being folded in the store. I want to find something that's never been creased and thought I'd check into a remnant. This is good to know for backup purposes. Thanks.

I got one for this post... Next time ya'll are in NYC, if you have some spare time and/or the opportunity... visit a little store on Canal Street (China Town) called Canal Street Rubber & Foam.
They're on the same side as Canal Street Plastics (another neat store). There in the Rubber & Foam store on Canal Street you'll find thick padding, used for insulation and noise dampening, along with cutting down on vibrations. The guy told me it's primarily used for sound proofing recording studio's. He some some bar and night club offices use the stuff, and in engine rooms (on biiig boats) and things like that. I told what I was going to use it for and he said it should fit my needs well. He was right! I picked up a small bit the last time up there and use it on the bare rubber floor by the drivers seat of the bus... let me tell you, I'm gettin' more! The stuff's not cheap, like $16.00 for a square yard. However, it takes away nearly all the vibration that hits your feet, not to mention it really does help absorb the sound of the road and make it easier to hear the radio and movies they won't let me watch while I drive. They have rubber hose there of all kinds and colors along with Foam of all kinds, shapes, and sizes too. The place is small, it's on the same side as Moondance Diner, Little Italy, and "between" Church Street "area" and MoonDance Diner (6th Ave.<also known as "Ave. of the Americas").I'm gonna get more and get some cheap carpet and glue it/attach it to the carpet. That's the only store I've come across that has anything like that foam, it's thick, over an inch thick! The stuff has some weight, so for all of you in custom super sleepers, you might have to carry a gallon less of water in those 75 gallon fresh water tanks... or just keep the holding tank valve open ever so slightly to entertain
the 4-wheelers behind you. Smile Everybody!

Hope that helps somebody. BigBusBob

When you go back for more if you can find out the brand name please post it. It sounds very good and I'd like to get some but won't go to NYC for anything.

I saw a very interesting application on the inside of a pickup truck last weekend at the Knox County Fair. This guy had Rhino lining on his floorboard, and it color matched the paint almost perfect. He was able to use a low pressusre stream of water and his truck was clean and looked as good as when it was first applied. Non-skid and said that it is made the cab very quiet inside.

I'll get more info on the stuff.
I've got NYC runs on a fairly regular basis.
Leo, it's not that bad... I run in and out of there all the time
and I'm 45 feet long and 102" wide without the mirrors.

I'm goin' up there again in Oct. I think. Otherwise it'll probably be November. Hard to say. I just spent most of June, July, and August runnin' the Carolina's to NYC.

I think it's fun!!!
