Voting for the Expediters Hall of Fame

I have been working on the project of the Expediters Hall of Fame in my spare time and would like some input on things. Yes I started the web page and paid for everything out of my own pocket to get it started. But really I'm just the keeper of the site. The people are the ones that help make the rules on who goes in to the Exxpediters Hall of Fame. My goal is when we build our own building in a few years I would like to have a part of this build for the Expediters Hall of Fame.

I would like everyones input on this as to, should there be a group of people from the business to over see things? Who picks the people? When does everyone vote and where? Should it be like Baseball and you have to have a 75% vote to get in? I really would like everyone input, even the people that read the fourms from all the different carriers.

Well, A person usually enters a true Hall of Fame AFTER their career is completed, and usually after 5 years of retirement...if nobody knows any accomplishments,, than it is just a popluarity contest.

What makes a driver worthy?? What is the yardstick used? Do you have a seperate "Hall" for each class of truck?

Expediters go back to at least the mid 80's maybe earlier, When did Roberts Start?? Thompson?? Any before them??? I'm not sure...BUT....surely the founders must be considered...NOT current drivers, unless they have continually driven since the inception on "Expedite", but than what is to say a driver is voted in and commits a horrible wrong.....kick 'em out???, The Hall is forever.

Consider Pete Rose getting voted in before retirement....and getting caught gambling during his career ..post inductee...

Another Example: Cal Ripken was not voted into the Hall of Fame in his 12th year, nor even his 19th year....Not even after he broke Gehrig's record in 1995. ( You Mentioned baseball in your post ):)

And who would be the "Inductors"....????????

Just a consideration...A-Rex

I'm right there with ya Rex. Where's the Drywall Contractor Hall of Fame? Do we have one of those? What about the Pipe Fitter Contractor Hall of Fame? The last time I voiced my opinion on this subject I rained on everyone's parade and pίssed in everyone Cheerios, all in one whack, and got handed my hat (well, the thread was locked).

Even though this picture was Photoshopped, by me, (I replaced "Cartage" with "Expediting"), it does illustrate my point as to the history of expediting.

This in no way is to suggest that the project shouldn't move forward, however.

Sounds like when they tried to start the expediters history book project and how someone wanted to host the project on their site.

What ever happened to that?

I still say it all started with the rail roads.

Bruno, the idea of a hall of fame is a nice idea, but i just don't think it will work here.So I have found out,Tri State has been in business since 1978,Roberts in 1979,and the others much later. You have to put the people in that thought of the concept of expediting, but their were expedite loads before 1978,just wasnt called expedite.
The original guys starting both Roberts Express, and Tri State have to be concidered first. After that, you cant make a good decission whom to put in.Dispatchers, safety people, they do a thankless job,but would not be put in a hall of fame. Many of us in the beginning did crazy things to help form a customer base.We hauled loads for revenue today that most of the contractors would laugh at.Many of us ran better than 50% dead head,to satisfy a potential customer.Yes,probably we should be in that hall,it's not my decission.Like I said, just don't know where you waould start.

It just amazes me every time some one comes up with an Idea for somthing thats a good thing it gets slammed by the Bitter Hearts here.

I think Bruno has come up with somthing realy good.

There are those that remind one of (Jeff Dunham's) Walter.
So I suppose when you you go to Washington DC You Visit the Source that Puts the Screws to ya every year at tax time. So instead of seeing the sites you sit across the Street and Flip off the IRS.

TennesseeHawk should be there Nitecreacher, Cherie, Bruno,

Iceroadtrucker, Thanks for your kind words, but I have done nothing to be put in the Expediters Hall of Fame. Many others that I can think of. Bruce Simpson, Lawrence McCord, and many more.

Steve back in 1978 Tri-State started out as a flat bed company.

I have to agree with IRT...why do some slam this topic?

This unique type of business and the nay sayers are coming out with traditional HOF standards...we are far from traditional...the criteria for this would be different in some respects...

I agree with Turtle, and I'll voice my opinion even at the risk of being labled a killjoy. Even though it was put forward with the best of intentions, an Expediters hall of Fame is a dumb idea. Next it will be a Dispatcher Hall of Fame, and then the Forklift Drivers Hall of Fame. Give me a break, it's not like we're in the public eye and kids want to grow up to be us. It's a good career, and there are many people that love to do it. Leave it at that.

Add me to the killjoy list. Just do not see the point of the whole thing. People are not well enough known in this industry to even begin such an endeavor. Sure you got a few of the early company people then what? I would guess most of those that could be considered as contributing to the history of expediting are not even known by anyone outside their circle of friends.

I think the above quote makes more sense than anything I see here. We're in our ninth year of expediting and there are many of the names of old timers that we don't recognize.

Maybe a page here on EO with their names, pictures, and stories, written by Lawrence or someone else that remembers "back in the day". Maybe keep it reserved for those that did something "above and beyond" that would actually interest those that did not know them.

One of the people that intrigues me to this day is Glen Rice. When we first started in the industry, the hub bub was all about his "deuce coupe", the one-of-a-kind truck that he and his wife Janice leased to FECC. I think their story of joy and then the grief of losing not only that beloved truck but much, much more, and then the "rising from the ashes" would be an interesting read for ANY newcomer and I know for sure that if one hasn't seen the pictures, inside and out of the deuce coupe, they'd really enjoy doing so. Maybe even get Glen to write it himself?? We've all endured hardship but I dare say that not many have or will go through what those two did and come out the other side the way they have.

Just my thoughts on a beautiful Sunday afternoon.
