Well isn't that what the forum is all about ...
An interaction within the social fabric of the community?

Whether or not you make an non-expediting comment doesn't matter at all but what does is what seems to be happening with a lot of forums - promoting another site and moving members away from EO, which means moving them away from the sponsors by telling them to participate somewhere else.

Maybe it is me, but maybe not from a lot that I have been reading on the issue of Forums and the loss of members.

Me? won't catch me there unless I have another book to promote or a new business where I need the access.

Facebook is a nice tool for the company. It connects our staff and our customer much in the way that EO does for our driving force. As well it lets us post pictures (new ones today!), links, documents and info to keep customers updated with what is going on at the company. It is like EO but different and complimentary.

I understand John, it is a great tool for a company, Twitter and Linkedin also can be used as great tools but I am just making a point about the forum and how these tools can take away from the forum - that's all.

Like I said, I won't use them until I have another book to promote or I have a new business.

Greg, People also use facebook because they don't have to deal with the negativity and scrutenty of certain people. Its as easy as blocking, deleting, or denying them as a friend. Its a lot less political, and a lot less bs.

Also if I recall correctly, Panther posted links to twitter and fb last year and this year while doing the truckers for tots gig, but that was totally ok then, right?

Lots of carriers have facebook, and facebook groups so drivers can connect , that are still on here. Do you really think John is going to pull all support from EO for fb?

Jenny,
I don't want to get you mad but here is what I'm saying.

What I am getting at is simply this site derives it operating costs off of the advertising that is sold so we don't pay a dime for access at all, which makes it a great thing. Outside of the negativity, the arguing and so on, the members comes here and participate as an open community which the more participation, the more membership grows and the more it grows, the more revenue grows with it.

I think you know that ... right?

BUT when there is another place that does the same thing for the members to communicate, membership sometimes drops or at least the participation does and for the site owner who is trying to increase user participation because of advertising, having everyone go to another site seems to be counterproductive in the least. The reason for my question.

The other site (I won't mention it) seems to be a good example, lots of people from there are here and they prefer to stay here. As Turtle said the other day all he hears are the crickets. The same thing applies to EO, if there is a promotion of say Twitter, then people could use that service first and membership here can drop off.

Does that make any sense?

Lots of carriers have facebook, and facebook groups so drivers can connect , that are still on here. Do you really think John is going to pull all support from EO for fb?

I think they are great tools for the carrier as much as it is for any business for promotion of their business. Authors use both 'fb' and twitter to promote their books while some business use twitter to promote their products.

Do I expect John to drop EO to go to fb?

No not at all, rather the entire point was to say that if the site promoted using twitter or facebook, it does not make a bit of sense from a site revenue point of view and a lot of owners of forums are refusing to go down that road just because it is a form of competition.

Greg: EO and Facebook are like pencil & pen: each is great for it's own purpose, and neither will take the other's place.
Facebook is where I can see photos of my nephew's new baby [within hours!] and 'keep up' with the whole extended family and friends who never visit EO. It's like a mini blog for everyone, with photos - cool!
Here, we're united by one common interest, and there's always something new to learn about it, and new folks to meet, and a chance to argue politics [if so inclined], with some humor sprinkled in. Facebook can't help us much with tricky FMCSA rules, or truck questions, or carrier/fleet owner/driver problems, either.
Both are treasures, for different reasons.

Cheri,
I understand all of that, I understand Jenny's and John's position but from a standpoint of people who make money off of membership through ad revenue, it can be counterproductive --> that's the point.

Facebook and Twitter can also expose EO to a much wider audience, as well - people who would not have heard of it otherwise, so it could work for, rather than against, EO.:)

Yes, I know that too.

Here is what I originally said.

Well I don't get the entire facebook thing or twitter thing - isn't that all sort of taking away from EO?

You post there, you post here, is there not a difference?

I posted that almost exact statement on another forum and I didn't get any response like I did here. Not saying that there is a difference in intelligence or anything like that but rather a stark difference in opinions.

Over 300 fans now! I am considering a music video on youtube, lol.

John

If you make a music video in your DI get up singing "Six days on the Road" , then post it on EO and Youtube. I will donate $500.00 to help fight breast cancer. Anyone else want to donate to help fight breast cancer? Now you got to be in a truck singing then backing the truck in the Load1 dock, then hop out and get in your car driver home to the wife.
