Drivers are being asked for their input. Please take a few minutes and let your voice be heard. (From Dave Nemo's website.)

Driver Visibility Survey
Posted on May 4, 2010

The capability to see all around a vehicle is a fundamental requirement for any driver. If the driver can't see other vehicles or obstacles--either by direct vision or through the use of supplemental vision devices, such as mirrors--he or she is more likely to be involved in a crash.

The Technology & Maintenance Council (TMC) has developed a recommnended practice, entitled RP 428, "Guidelines for Vision Device," to specify minimum driver vision requirements and suggest various means of achieving these
requirements. A task force within TMC's Cab & Controls Study Group is in the process of updating this RP and needs your help.

TMC is requesting all drivers to participate in a survey that will help the task force:
Document the present vision needs of drivers,
Prioritize the improvement actions needed, and;
Provide an opportunity for fleets to provide valuable input on vision-related issues.

The survey involves gathering information on the use of both direct vision and indirect vision devices. Direct vision is defined as unaided vision as viewed through the vehicle windshield or side windows. Indirect vision is defined as vision aided by vision devices--usually mirrors.

The survey is designed to be completed in 5-10 minutes, unless you choose to give a longer written explanation or clarification (optional).

Drivers may take the survey online at Technology & Maintenance Council or go directly to Untitled Document.

Thank you for supporting this effort to get driver and fleet input on this vital subject.

A study is needed to determine that it's better to be able to see better? I wonder how many of my tax dollars are being spent on this?

You are baffled by this as well Star???

Guess they want to idiot proof the simple art of backing up.

I think maybe a look at the numbers....the correlation of the lack of driving skills since the advent of the auto transmission..there is some out here would never have passed their CDL if they had to at least shift an 8 speed manual...

IMO skills have diminished somewhat now....the same people that couldn't pass a manual tranny test are some of the same that can not back up worth crap....

They are not truck drivers but oversized cargo van drivers...

None of your tax dollars are at work here. The TMC is not a government entity.
I used the opportunity to point out that Paccar's placement of mirrors eliminates the vibration found in mirrors mounted on the doors. I also brought up road spray and use of headlights and taillights at all times.
You may have your own ideas on ways to improve visibility. This survey is one that gives the opportunity to be heard.
Of course, if you've never had a close call because someone was in a blind spot, the survey also gives the chance to mention what a lucky driver you are.

As long as we are talking visibility, many states have lights on when wipers are on,but how many cars and trucks actually do this?We have daylight running lights, how hard do you think it would be,to have the lights automatically come on ,when the wipers are turned on?

I'd like to see headlights and taillights on, both. The daytime running lights don't help a bit when you come up behind someone in a downpour.

It called 'fog tail light' & i'd like to see it more common on our roads.
tho'w it is mandate at many places around the world ,
i wouldn't like to see it mandated over here ,
just something that you can actually buy as aftermarket .
& have cars salesman's saying :"get the S model , it's comes with factory installed fog tail light"

I can't see the point of this study...

Im thinking its to make a law requiring us to buy some sort of back-up cameras

My proplem with visibilty comes mostly thru the use of white lights..Mainly the constustion lights (overhead)set up that point directly into oncoming traffic,,Also some of the new emergency vechile lights are so bright that I cant see whats beyond or next to em. Sometimes especially late at night its just way to many flashing lights.
Ive also seen some trucks that are so decked out in the new led lights that I lose sight of thier brake lights.
I know some of it is my eyes are getting older but not all of it because I hear other drivers with the same complaint..Just way to bright...
