OK why am I so happy right now? Maybee how I look at this business. I do not see the long time Posters complaining here. Why? They understand this business and are good managers of their money, and cycles of this business.

Things could be better, but they always could be better. Wake up tommorow and say to yourself "THIS IS GONA BE A GREAT WEEK" Try it, its a whole lot better than a pitty party.

To those who insist on looking at the glass empty, please do me and others a favor. Get out now, your hurting yourself and the industry. Chances are you got in over what this business is capable of delivering and its only a matter of time before you sink. In any business, time must be invested to learn it and make it super profitable knowing the ins and outs and staying positive.

If you woke up this morning hating your decision that your sitting in that truck than this is probably not for you. Many posts here warning of the pittfalls this business has to offer.

Hey Broompilot

After leaving the business for a short time (8 months) and returning, if I woke up thinking I done made a mistake comming back my wife will slap me silly.

It does take a great deal of dedication and a tremendous positive attitude to succeed in expedite or any business for that matter. No sense in whinning and developing a bad attitude it will only make you bitter and sick.

Interesting post. When some jump in, they are unprepared for the slow times, afraid to make changes, think they will be millionaires, or undermanage and over finance their business.
You are correct in that the ones that have been around for awhile are very busy. We have been busy and you are right, some are and some aren't for a variety of reasons.
Seems like it goes in cycles.

Well, I think things are just the norm for this time of year. Things seem to be picking up. Just wanted to say Hello to all. My wife Don't like me chatting on here because of the bull sometimes. But for the most part the people are great on here. I have been sitting back and reading the nice post's from Leo, Davekc, RichM, Broompilot, and Terry. It was really nice to see so many Driver's post something for Rene. I hope she is doing better Terry.

Well, enough from me. I will go be quite again.

Not that some long-timers don't go down for the count sometimes due to various reasons, but what I've seen in this business they are generally few and far between compared to jump in newcomer truck owners entering the business with minimal or no previous knowledge of it. I have casually observed and noted that as far as new truck owners go in expediting if they make it through two fiscal years/tax seasons and are still around, they pretty much know what they are doing after that amount of time and have the management skills to survive. The first 6-8 months are always the most trying time, I remember my accountant telling me if you get through the first 8 months you'll be OK. Still no matter how long you stay at it you always have to watch the bottom line and continue to manage business in a proper manner, getting careless can bring one down no matter how long they have been at it, and the trucking business changes constantly, I have seen about 3 major changes just in the expediting field since I came aboard in 2001, I am finally semi-retired now and run a lot less, but always managed to keep head above water and made money at this running full time, its not rocket science but not a walk in the park either. Ditto!!!

I went out and bought a new truck on January 18th. I know, it is the slowest month of the year in the expediting business.

Ran about two weeks with a small company. Nice folks but more geared toward the courier side of business.

Leased to a very professional organization on February 8th.

Stayed in service 100% of the time.

Sleep in the truck. Brrrr! Haven't spent a dime on hotels.

Rarely eat in restaurants. Maybe three meals in seven days. I do eat fruit, granola bars and canned tuna.

Ran almost 2,000 miles this week and could have done more, but the truck needs an oil change.

Dispatchers appreciate my courteous responses to their requests and it is appreciated when we remember to thank them for the job they do! I wouldn't want to be couped up inside and take flank for drivers and shippers alike. I think they have pretty big shoes to fill.
