Full-Size Vans, By The Numbers - Truck Trend

From comment section...

The new Transit’s wheelbase of only 147.6 inches seems too short for a vehicle just over 22 feet long in the “extended-length” model. Transit’s rear extension of 28-1/2 inches makes the rear overhang just seem too long and out of proportion aesthetically, and will probably make towing heavy loads that much more difficult. Maintaining proper weight distribution when loaded will also require more attention as well unless it’s equipped with dual rear wheels. My present extended Ford E-350, with an extension of only 20 inches by comparison, is already too long at back.

The Transits front wheels are set back further than the E350, which balances the truck cg and reduces rear overhang. At 21 mpg on gas, I'll bet most owners will appreciate the true beauty of the Transit. The hot model for expediting may well be the mid roof long length, not the high roof extended length. I'll be in my E350 as well until I build 16' 2" box cab/chassis Transits. That's next.

This is where they will make or break it...payload!

Ford has not yet announced maximum payload capacities for the Transit, so we don't know who has the edge in that department. Ford has also not yet announced the official output figures on the 3.5-liter EcoBoost V-6 as installed in the Transit, saying only that figures will be "close" to those in the F-150. We're confidently predicting output of around 350 hp and 400 lb-ft of torque, which would make the Transit the horsepower king among vans.

Ford HAS announced the GVW which is 9,600 lbs. for the 4 wheelers. What is the sprinter? 8,550? The E350 is about 5,200 lbs. and Ford has said the Transit will be 300 lbs. lighter, about 4,900 lbs. empty, resulting in an expected 4,700 lbs. payload.

I would think more realistically about 3700 payload... Driver , fuel plus all the junk that we carry...

3700 payload is better than my e350 it's 3160. I am not worried about the overhang you just have an air bag system they use in p/ups for towing it would level you out and you would ride fine

What Ford hasn't said is what model Transit is being compared to what model E-350.

I believe that when cargo van manufacturers are bragging about payload weight, chances are that vehicle is the smallest in length, shortest in height, has the smallest engine, no options, no fuel, no spare tire and helium in the other 4 tires. Probably even has holes drilled in the brake rotors.
