Van Forum

Has the EO team ever considered having a forum for Van drivers/owners? Seems like they would greatly benefit from having a place of their own to share information. They could still be a part of the regular forums but they could answer each other's questions and help each other with quick, easy access to their own forum. Seems like some of their problems are unique to their situation. Thoughts?

I don't know, there are enough fuzzy bunny lovers around here to justify a forum but....

Yeah, I have a thought: BAN THE VAN! And the people that own and drive them.

If you separate out different forums for different vehicles types, newbies who come here looking for information may very well come here predisposed to a certain type of vehicle, say, a van, and may therefor ignore the forums that deal with straight trucks. They end up missing out on straight truck information that may very well change their mind about which vehicle is best for them.

Plus, Ive seen a lot of good vehicle-specific advice handed out by someone driving a completely different vehicle. That may or may not have happened if they don't spend a lot of time in a forum that deals with not-their-vehicle.

Can we have a forum for the owners of 1999 Freightliner FL-70's Reefer trucks with Bentz sleepers, lift gate, XM radio that need to be painted?

Why would you paint your XM radio?

HI;
I agree with I-Hammer with Van Forum ..
As eveyone has already posted..( Painting a XM Radio---what does that have to do with wanting a Forum for Vans )
way too much trashing about someone asking a simple question !!
A lot of you guys on here are bashing someone interested in getting into Expediting with a van or Sprinter ....
Positive comments help people new not trashing !!

Not everyone like myself can afford to get a $50 to $ 100,000.00 Straight truck or T.T. or also some people do not want the hassle of driving around for hours finding a place to park because truck stops and rest areas a full and have to deal with log books and DOT regulations and snale scales, etc.....

By the way...
Witnessed a SC state Tropper ticketing drivers this morning Trucks parking ileagally in a rest area on I-85 heading to Charlotte..
That includes parking on side of road as exiting the rest area..
All because they could not find a place to park and had to stop because of DOT rules !!!!

Please guys...
And Moderators..
The Van Forum is a good idea..
Thanks

Giving someone blunt, brutally honest advice is not the same as bashing. It's far better to let someone new know exactly what they are getting into than it is to paint a pretty picture and to lie to them. The more diverse the opinions they get, the better a newbie can make an informed decision.

Rmctt2: I hope you don't really believe that posters are trashing people who want to get into expediting in a van, because they're most definitely not. What they are trying to point out is that the market for vans is already at the saturation level, and many current o/o's and drivers are barely getting by. For the very reasons you mentioned, (can't afford to buy a straight truck) would it be better to encourage newbies to buy a van, and join those already waiting for loads?
I'm not suggesting that everyone driving a van is struggling - there are a lot who are doing well, but they have the experience to make the right decisions on which loads to accept, where to layover, etc. The odds of anyone inexperienced getting into expediting right now, and being profitable in a cargo van, don't look terribly encouraging - sorry if that's not what you wanted to hear, but it's the truth as we see it.

I don't know if a van-only forum would be helpful or not. I do know it would be helpful if all posters identified the kind of trucks they run, their carrier and driving style (solo/team). When someone comes on and says how strong or weak freight is, or how much pay is down or up, or how the fuel surcharge is or is not working for them, that information differs among truck types and expediting styles.

When someone posts something like "Slow freight is killing me and I'm getting out.", It does readers little good because so much about the situation is unknown. Whereas if the same poster simply added solo driver, B-unit, carrier name, it would say so much more. It would also be more likely to prompt opposite responses like "The freight has been steady for me." from drivers with the same carrier and similar trucks.

If you are just looking to vent, it matters not what you say. But if you are posting to help others learn from your experience, it is helpful to include more about the kind of expediting you do.

Yeah .... what Phil said ..... why couldn't this info be part of an individuals profile ?

Sounds like something to turn the code-monkeys loose on ..... how 'bout it L ?

It is done in the new forum that we are rolling out sometime in December. But Phil's suggestion that people place it in their Sig file is easier to view.
