Used Box vs New

If stretching a used class 8, which would be the best way to go long term....a good solid used box, or a new box.

All things being equal...except a warranty of course.

All things being equal would also include price, and if the price of a new box is the same as the price of a used one, go with the new one. :D

But it mainly depends on two things, one, what is the condition of the used box, and two, how old is the used Class 8 and how long do you plan on using the truck. The longer you plan on using the truck, the newer (or the better condition) the box should be.

Kidron , near the Smuckers plant in Ohio was a good
place to look three-four years ago. Bought a like new
twenty four footer for exactly 1/2 what the new one cost.
They also had a lot near plant that had at least 50 trailers
from $50 --- $50,000

New .
(o'h commo'n ,no surprised here...)
i recently had the chance to see up close a few brand new trailers ,and was amazed of the new technology they provide .
after that experience ,i look on my 4 year old 22'box ,and dream of the day i will have a chance to sit down with a truck builder ,and spec a new box . maybe some day we can start a conversation about the real value of that new technology's .
especially when it comes to reefers.
and yes ,what the reptile man said . the box life span should overlast the truck by just a short time .
BTW,Ellenbum and interstate ,normally have some boxes in the yard .

Ok, The tractor is an '06 9200, coming up on 400k with a 350cummins engine 10spd. The box being considered is a 2006 Supreme 22' Barn Doors 4 row etrack, Fork Package....$3200 plus install (it was somewhere around 1k-1.5k.....figures aren't infront of me)

I believe the new is in the 10k range if I recall qoute....unsure if that was installed.....not my truck, going from memory today.

Interstate had a few used in their yard, thanks moose.... we were gonna call Robert for a quote as well.

Update: Been hands on with the box...it is tight/solid/dry with a tin roof ;-). The new was a quote via phone....but nice on line....lots of changes from 06 to 2011....as well as cost

Grab the serial and model number of the box and call the manufacture to have them pull the spec sheet. It is sometimes surprising what options are order and what you can still get retro-fitted onto the box.

I personally like my translucent roof and wouldn't have it any other way, but I spend alot of time loading and unloading freight. For an expeditor a tin roof should work, just make sure you have two lights at the very least.
I'd go for the used, the new doesn't stay new for very long!!!!

I would go used, for the same $$$ you can add underbelly storage and all of your material handling / securement needs

Hey reefer, long time no hear.

Rex, it does not cost anymore to stretch a cabover than it does a conventional. If you are going to get int this and do it right, then ....do it right, don't wish you'd taken a bit of extra time and effort collecting the proper equipment that will make you money. The truck you propose will look like and function like any other 22 foot tandem (a cookie cutter). Try and distance yourself from the "herd" with a useful and profitable machine. And yes, I have had great results with used boxes, you just have to do a lot of research to find, and running to get it, but you will not have the "should haves" a couple months afer fielding your equipment.

Well, if my buddy could locate a decent COE, he'd go for it...and I meant to say he is looking at a 24', not 22...

A Good Argosy is not in his budget as a first time O/O....the '06 9200 is. Gotta work with what he has, and build from there.....you know a good one under 28k???? That is not on the west coast.

So what words of wisdom...what is the money maker he'd wish he waited for? I make sure he reads it ;-)

Thx
