US Customs Raises Rates

I was charged $10.75 US re-enter the USA at the Ambassador Bridge last week. It used to be $5.00, which I never understood either.
Are any of the expediting companies increasing their incentives for Canadian freight?
The company I am leased with has only made it marginally incentivized to begin with, not enough to influence me to want to put up with the increased paperwork (at the minimum)and of course all the traffic delays (ON A BRIDGE!).

Rates are going up, is our compensation?

Someone please correct me if I'm wrong, but I think that latest increase was supposed to be for of all things, the Department of Agriculture. I don't know about you, but I can't recall ever carrying any freight that would have anything to do with them.

Maybe they need the extra bucks for invading our neighbors to the north's coolers, fridges, and lunch boxes!

I'm just a lake paddling boy from Minnersota, but ya I'm thinking it may have to do with bridge maintenanace you betcha, eh. Ya fer some reason bridge maintenance has become somewhat in vogue. I can't imagine why fees devoted to roadway and bridge maintenance would be diverted to agricultural or light rail issues.

$10.75 to re-enter your own country; quit your bitchin' you freakin' commie. We oughta charge you twice as much just because you left the country in the first place. And besides that, the Department of Agriculture would like to know if that is Canadian marijuana or U.S. grown marijuana for tax purposes only.

Ya see DD the Dept of Homeland Security is enforcing the FDA and Dept of Ag rules and are using thier resources to enforce another dept's rule...BUT DHS was incurring the costs...hence the new fee. As I was informed without breaching National Security is all confiscated goods covered by the FDA and Dept of Ag are sent to them for disposal ..and an accompaning report...expolsive grapes?

Moot you are really on a roll!!!*L*

Yea Diesel, the thing is I come back to the states, pay the $10.75 and have them take my beef jerky that I bought at the wal-mart in Atlanta - I guess this is why I paid the money.

That's pretty goofy, Greg. Did they not care that you bought it in Atlanta or was it because it went over and came back??(guessing here) We've never had them mess with us over food, haven't even asked.

Well that would just about do it for me on the canada stuff,if I come back to the states and they confiscate my Cleveland bologna.DD.

Doggie...if they catch ya, the bologna is history....I lost beefy jerky as well and all beef bologna. Its weird because processed beef products have never been official included in the beef ban BUT just try to tell the DHS officer that!!! That'll cost ya 1 hour in the penalty box for mis-speaking!!!Because you didn't pucker up when he bent over!!!!

Funny stuff all'yall!
Stay off that processed beef anyway, just in case anybody cares about ya.
I've never been pulled over for food either.
BUT I did get yanked for vocabulary!
The US Customs guy asks, "Do you have any freight?"
I said, "No, I am unladen."
"What is that?" says he, and off I am to Xray.
Sheesh. Here's your $10.75 Mr. Customs Officer, and here's "My sign" for trying to be correct(credit to Bill Engvall, BE Inc).
I guess I'll stick to one word answers from now on.

Actually if you say your empty and they check you out and find your personal stuff that you didn't claim now you could have yet another problem for not declaring it..."Officer Discretion"

Your "supposed to" fill out a "Inbound Manifest" fillout the top as per usual and write "EMPTY" in the frieght section.
I got grabbed at Champlain NY last year for this infraction...had to go "inside"

We got grabbed there too, Ken and they weren't very nice about it! Actually they were down right nasty, yelling at us like we were little kids in the principal's office!!

We used to keep our FAST cards in the visor and after a couple years they were pretty brittle..as the "officer went to hand them back he "accidently" snapped them in half and we were then compelled to get new ones...good thing Champlain has a FAST office...BUT it cost us some time!!! Nasty is soft to what I called them!!!*L*

Wow!! And we sit there like little kids and take this stuff because we have to, anything else would only create further struggle.

I guess we could have asked to see a supervisor?????*L*

On a serious note though...WHY do "some" think they can treat us like this????? We have no re-course to address this "abuse" of power...we could write our Congress person. yeah right....

The border is like pre 1776...no laws, no rights, no constitution. nada Just have to do whatever they request!!! The DHS answers to no one...Now thats scary...

AND just for that ONE person who'll argue.....
Ok Ok the Canada Border service can be the same way at times....

My exact thoughts Ken, almost every time we have to cross. I thought at one time there was something about them being told to be more civil. Can't remember what it was all about (if I only had a memory) but remember hearing about it on the news.

It's a legit question though, who do you complain to??

I have to say that the Canadian border agents have ALWAYS treated us with nothing but respect. I've heard the stories and am not in denial, I'm just saying that we've never experienced this problem from them.

Champlain is the only crossing we've been through that has to have the form filled out when you're empty. We got nabbed too...got fussed at like we were 3yrs old and were told that ALL BORDER CROSSINGS require it. We were smart, and didn't argue with him.

"were told that ALL BORDER CROSSINGS require it"

There lies part of the problem..NO CONFORMITY! Across the system...one gives paperwork back one does not and so on and so on......No one knows the rules...A driver doesn't know the policy of the day at that particular crossing.

The Canadian system for the most part is the same if crossing New Brunswick to BC...

We NEED consistenency across the board!!
