HELLO EVERYONE. I AM IN WYOMING AND MY CAT 15( WESTERN STAR 2001, 10 SPEED) BROKE DOWN.DROPPED A VALVE. BROKE A PISTON IN CYLINDER 2. THE PETERBILT SHOP IN ROCKSPRING,WYOMING, GAVE ME AN ESTIMATE OF $25 000 TO REBUILD THE ENGINE. JUST THE CORE CHARGE OF THE HEAD WAS ESTIMATED OF $4320.ANY BODY GIVE ME AN URGENT ADVICE WHAT TO DO?
THIS A LOT OF MONEY TO REBUILD AND ENGINE. ANY SHOP YOU KNOW IN THE VICINITY WHICH IS CHEAPER THAN THIS?

I AM A DRIVER BUT NOT REALLY MECHANICALLY INCLINED. THIS COST OF COURSE.. THE TRUCK IS STIL IN THE SHOP AND ME IN A HOTEL.( $65 AND NIGHT) I HAVE TOUGH TIME AS THE REPAIR WOULD BE IN US FUNDS AND I AM CANADIAN. TRANSALTED MEANS CLOSE TO $30 000 TO OVERHAUL THE ENGINE. WHAT IS A NORMAL PRICE FOR REBUILDING AN ENGINE?
SHOULD I REPLACE THE ENGINE OR SHOULD I FIX THE CYLINDER LINER AND THIS ONE INJECTOR. I ESTIMATED JUST THIS WILL COST AROUND 17 000 INCLUDING THE CORE!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I AM PANICKING AS TIME IS AGAINST ME AND THE CIRCUMSTANCES. PLEASE ADVICE URGENTLY. RECENTLY I PUT NEW TRANSMISSION AND NEW TIRES. ANY SUGGESTIONS PLEASE?

You have access to a computer so start imm. looking at Western Star, Freightliner Dealers. I would call the one outside of St. Louis just into ILL. I am sure a new replacement with tow is not $25K.

These people were great to work with.

During my last run out (6-weeks) I delivered two brand new Engines for Western Stars, that blew up before the truck was even delivered. Needed the engines ASAP.

I wish you luck and hope others with more expierence can help you out here just my suggestion.

Sorry to hear of your engine problem.

I would suggest giving Heath Wood of Middle Georgia Freightliner a call - he is an expert on CAT engines and maybe able to offer you some advice, his number is 888-849-4601.

Have you looked in Wyoming for a Cat dealer? They may have a few additional options like a reman ect. $25,000 sounds too high. Even though you are obviously pressed for time, I would do alittle more research. And as mentioned, I wouldn't be afraid to tow it if the ends justify the means.

Good luck, and hopefully it all works out for you.

He is trying to find the bigger Cat engine. A C15.
He will struggle to find one at $12,000 unless it is used.
But I agree, $25,000 for a C15 is pretty high

The new cats at $12,000 are the 3126's . Too small for a star.
