UPS Linehaul

Recently I noticed a huge increase in the number of small, unknown carriers pulling UPS 53 footers and pups. Did UPS negotiate some concessions from the Teamsters concerning road drivers and outside carriers? Has anyone else noticed this?

I saw a Mercer truck pulling UPS doubles a couple of days ago myself and thought it odd for the time of year. Nothing's unusual about it during the holiday rush. I guess they're in a crunch like everyone else and have no choice but to use outside carriers. UPS teamsters are not what they used to be the only teamsters anymore with a solid contract are ABF drivers.

UPS freight OTR teams are IC's. Big ad spots on Sirius radio lately for them. Not surprised by them subbing loads out, or doing power-only moves.

Why is it that when a Teamster works with the company, for the overall good of the company, they are considered weak ?

The Teamster's are not the UAW. :)

Maybe because UPS has never been a weak company teetering on the brink?

Maybe they have a need to move freight more quickly than hub to hub transfers, therefore the use of outside carriers to do it.

UPS Freight does a lot of expedite from their terminals, mainly because they can't get it delivered in time. Also, because they don't want to send a whole truck and trailer out to BFE for just one or two skids. I do a lot of that. It pays very well, too.

That's just good business sense.

I have some friends that did Power Only for UPS and USPS at Christmas Time, made big crazy money for drop and hook.

I think a trip to bfe would be fun as long as I could get a guarantee I wouldn't be held up or murdered in E. It's not quite the same country it was just a few years ago. I'm just hoping for another shot at Alaska though.

I would much rather see, and spend more time, in Alaska, than any other place I can think of, other than Michigan. "E" would never even be on my list if I were a gazillionaire with unlimited time!

I'm reporting this to Deputy Sheriff Leo. You used a naughty word cleverly hidden in that map. We don't need your stinkin' pile of feces posts where youngins' might see it. You need a 6 month vacation.

All I really wanted to learn from this thread was if others could confirm what I was seeing and if anyone had specific knowledge of this. I do know that the recent contract between UPS and the Teamsters had UPS raising starting wages and agreeing to more full time positions. I was wondering if the Teamsters, in turn, conceded some use of outside carriers for linehaul.

It does and it doesn't. It makes good business sense because it keeps the customer happy. It makes poor business sense because UPS Freight (formerly Overnite) isn't set up to service customers directly outside of about a 50 mile radius of their terminals without interlining with another carrier. This generally means an extra day of transit time which the origin terminal fails to realize when they book and guarantee a specific delivery date. Good for us in expedite. Not so good for what it costs UPS to meet their commitment to their customer.
