UK Firemen Rescue Cow Stuck in Tree

UK firemen called to rescue cow stuck up a tree | Reuters (Reuters) - A cow had to be rescued by fire services in northern England after it tumbled down a 30 meter river embankment and got stuck in a tree.

Fire crews in Cumbria were surprised to receive a call to rescue the cow, which had toppled 10 meters down a slope of the river Leith before a tree broke its fall.
The bruised bovine was discovered after its farmer noticed one of his cows was missing.

The animal was sedated by a vet before being winched out of the tree by firemen using specialist equipment.

"(Fire crews) had to wear body armor in case a stray hoof lashed out at them," said a spokesman for Cumbria Fire and Rescue Service.

"The vet checked the cow over and it seemed reasonably happy and relatively unscathed," he said.

Heat seeking helicopters, and tranquilizer toting bovine experts were at the ready. Just in case.

Oh, yeah. They've all get body armour. They need that when responding to calls about cats in trees. One of them might be a lion or something.

Seriously, many firefighters are now carrying bullet proof vests for when they have to respond in dangerous areas, especially when fire erupts in areas of civil unrest, or where explosive devices may be. Firefighters Under Fire

In America maybe - but after extensive searching (well one attempt actually) ..... I still cannot find anything to support UK Firemen have such items onboard. The only mention of the firemen wearing body armour is in American News reports ..... LOL.
My son was a volunteer fireman ... I will check it out with him & get back to you on this

Firemen and paramedics in Inner Cities have started to carry body armour in recent years.

Never having visited Penrith, Cumbria (up near Scotland) I couldn't tell you if it was inner city or not.

But nevertheless ...... I stand corrected .... Some Fire Engines do carry body armour, which is a very sad state of affairs

As I said, my son was a volunteer fireman .... now he is a police officer.

I have often thought how sad it is that the very ppl we call upon for help, that see the most gruesome of scenes, risk their own lives, are among the underpaid

Im glad Im not on that crew, because in allot of cases that involve a dramatic event or involving danger a female being rescued is known to fall in love with her rescuer..

True thats why I voulenteer, a little safer but most calls if we get serious like a code and especialy domestics and crime scenes we always have the police, andfiremen on scene for crowd controll and our safety.

It's not all that widespread and common here in the States, either. It's mostly inner city firemen who need to do that.
