for changing the oil and lube or working on the truck
one price for you having all parts and tools and only place
to work on the truck, or they provide oil and filters and tools
to use on the truck and dispose of the oil
there would be one price for using the a bay and having parts
or they provide parts etc, this would be in canton akron oh area
would be for minor maintenance only

Mr. Fuel in Indianapolis (I-465, exit #4) also has bays where you can change your own oil, lube your truck etc.

I myself would prefer to have a mechanic do my maintenance. I would be scared to death to drive I would fix myself :9

Hey Bill!!!!
Your co driver is probably a better mechanic then anyone out there. He is the one that should do the work.

Yes he is. He is great with the wrenches! I wish I had half of the ability he does. We make a great team, he works the wrenches while I do the paperwork and webwork. We believe in going with your strengths.

Mike used to change the oil on the truck. After a while he got tired of spending all his time home working on the truck. he felt he could have been doing something else. We now go to Speedco most of the time. It is quick, they do a good job. And he is much happier

Besides by the time you buy the oil, grease, filters (and equipment if Mike hadn't already had it)and the $50.00 the owner paid Mike for the labor, It would have cost more than going to Speedco.

I am glad I have all this crud and the ability to get "cuuddy" right at home.. I love it. It's not just an oil change, you'll get to know your baby. And it will pay off in dividends big time. As an O/O, the truck is your job and your livelihood. After all, expediting is TRUCKING, isn't it?

When the weather's nice, i do all the PM in the back yard, I also like to get under the truck and eyeball everything.. I was a mechanic for 30 years before my mid life career change, so I'm pretty comfortable doing my own work.. In the winter, I go to Pre Trip on Alexis road in Toledo, they will do it for $90 and it costs me about $60 at home.

I try to plan the transmission maintainance for summer, too. We have the Allison and I would hate to think how much that would cost.. I'm using the synthetic lube so it's good for 100,000.

I guess I wasn't very clear re: synthetics. I use the Transynd® brand, which is made my Castrol and sold by Allison. It's good for 100,000 miles in a line haul application, but less in heavier uses like rubbish or gravel. Regular Dexron® has to be changed every 25,000 miles. The down side is cost, $30/gallon, but I'd say that all evens out in the end. I also have synthetic in the differential and front hubs (75-90).

Engine oil is another story.. I have always used Rotella-T® 15-40 and have had such good luck, I'm not about to try any other brand. We use it in everything, even the lawn mower :) . I change about 15,000 and send a specimin to the lab every time.. My lab guy says it one of the best samples from a DT-466E he sees, and I should leave it in even longer. International says 12,000, and 15 to 18 is as far as I have ever went.

Seems like engine and tranny manufacturers alike are believers in the synthetic oil thing. It is now a warranty requirement in all Mercedes-Benz built diesels. I also found while truck shopping last week that Eaton/Fuller equips and requires synthetic lube in all thier new manual gearboxes.

Allison requires their Transynd® brand of synthetic if you get the extended warranty. Navistar is OK with mineral based oils. Frankly, I'm a little squeamish about synthetic engine oils 'cause they're so light in body, but maybe I'm just old fashioned. When I started wrenchin' back in the 60's, 30 weight was all we used in warm weather.

I opted for synthetic in the rear end and front hubs to get the longer drain interval and it seems to be holding up OK.

I had a long posting on synthetic oil a few months ago. I would avoid using it in older engines, as its light body does make it much more prone to leakage.
