I have a 2000 Det 500 that keeps blowing the freeze plug on the turbo unit. Any ideas why?

True love? :D

Freeze plugs can be problematic. Many people will use Permatex #1 to keep them in place. Others use rubber plugs.

Let's see if I can explain this. Detroits sometimes have a freeze plug problem caused by the thermostat. If the water heats up to operating temperature and the water pump is pumping at high rpms with the engine running but the thermostat does not open all the way. When this happens the added pressure in the water jackets causes it to push a freeze plug out. The weakest freeze plug is the one that will go.
My suggestion since it's an older model is change the thermostats out and see if that fix's the problem. If you have recently changed the water pump then you defiantly need to change the thermostat's. Always do them at the same time on a Detroit.
I hope that helps.
