Dennis,
I can't speak for EVERY carrier. I can think of a few examples of where I was mislead, if not flat out lied too though.
1) get paid in 30 days. That seemed like a long wait, but I went w/ em anyway. Then it became 30 days after invoice. I got 3 runs from this company in 4 months or so. 2 of those 3 times the originals I mailed got lost. The PODs had already been faxed. I remember posting about one of those times.
I did eventually get paid, but like 6 months later. That was for about $1200. Ironically, this same company paid me twice on a $600 run. Stupid me should have kept the $600 & just said "ok, you still owe me $600." But no, I told em about it & they cancelled the check. I was fine w/ that, because that's the way they wanted to do it. I guess in looking back if I was the one who told em about the being paid twice, I wasn't going to go cash the check on em.
2) A recruiter told me the reason their company paid less was because they paid for hotels up to the first $40 per nite. Ok, that makes perfect sense. So I get to orientation. We go to another place to have my signs put on. I bring up to the hotel thing to the guy who drove me there from their office & he's like "huh?? we don't pay for hotels.".. DOH!!!!
3) Another company insisted on calling at 6AM every morning. This was whether ya told em where you were at the nite before or not. I guess that in itself wasn't a lie. However, when I asked em to stop & they said they would, but kept on doing it, then it became a lie.
I'm looking for a 2nd company here. I'm extremely happy w/ the runs that get me out of here. It's just that I come back w/ nothing a bit to often. Here's part of what I told the recruiter. If they want to sign me on, they can. I've at least been honest w/ em though. Here's part of my letter:
As for the local work, I want to be upfront that I'm mostly going to be using you folks to get back home. EQS pays a fair amount more per mile, so I'll be using them to get out. They'd pay $75 to get me down to the Detroit area, where as you folks would pay me about $40. Those are pretty big differences. A lot of times they don't get me back home though. That's where you folks would be coming in.
That's as straight forward as I can be. I'm not leaving my house to go down to Detroit for $40 because they need a run covered. If I'm already down there I'll come back to this area for that if nothing else is available. They know in advance they're signing on a guy who'll be taking very few runs for em.
I think what Lisa was getting at is for someone to say how they're paying their drivers over $1/mile & they need more drivers & then offer .85 or whatever it is, it doesn't add up.
