Trucking Rule Changes in the Last 10 Years

In another thread, I began to list some of the regulatory changes that have been made in the last ten years that affect us as expediters. That got me to wondering what are the rest? A little help please? What reguatory (including tax) changes have you seen in the last ten years?

My list includes:

CSA

Loss of 5/5 rule

Huge fines for using cell phones by hand

HOS rules changes (specifics needed about each change).

There are more. What others come to mind?

Passports required to cross U.S./Canada border

IAC certification to haul freight to/from airports

Sleep apnea (pending)

Doctors must be in registry to give DOT physicals (affects us indirectly).

New York sticker on truck (recinded, re-enacted)

SMS (relates to CSA)

Toll increases far greater than the rate of inflation.

Biodiesel

Addition of 34 hour reset (HOS change)

Truck and car speed limit changes, up and down, different ways in different states.

Mexico carriers and drivers allowed to operate in U.S.

Pre-employment screening

Anti-idle restrictions

Speed limiters (Ontario and Quebec)

Tire chain law changes and fine increases

EPA requirements on truck manufacturers

Requriement that if you upgrade your old reefer engine for a new CARB-complant one, you cannot sell the old engine but must destroy it instead.

Red light cameras

CDL driver training (in the works)

No texting while driving.

DEF (not a reg but prompted by them)

TWIC

Move-over laws

Tanker endorsement required to haul totes.

ULSD fuel

No parking on freeway ramps (Indiana, other states?)

No smoking in truck stops (Indoor Air laws)

Remove snow from top trucks and trailers (NJ and some others, I think)

NY-registered trucks, add mirrors to front of trucks if you drive in NYC.

Aerodynamic devices added to trailers (SmartWay)

Yep...just like the latest Obamacare mess. Had to move the mandate for businesses to 2015 because they finally seen that train wreck coming right in front of the mid-term elections.

It is what it is. I'm not commenting on the list items one way or another. I'm simply listing the regulatory changes that Diane and I have seen since entering the business 10 years ago. More are coming to mind, now that my brain is on the subject. I'm adding them to the list above as they come to mind.

I've never listed this stuff in one place before, It is quite something to review the list and think about all the changes there have been.

Kind of goes under EPA list but just running the DEF now that does pretty much nothing other than adding 15 to 20k to the price of a new truck. Now that we are idling a half hour every day for no reason (except maybe a solo), the original concept of saving a tree just went out the window.

I think it is fair to say that it does not matter what political party occupies the White House at the time. Rule making continues at a rapid pace.

Was just making sure that people here didn't start the it's all Obama's fault for everything that is going on right now when it comes to the screwed up rules we live under.

Be careful about calling these people idiots, they are not. In fact, they are highly intelligent, highly motivated, brilliant people. Politics and political activism is practiced at numerous levels nationwide. There is a class of people called the political elite who finds the game attractive and inspiring. They hone their craft and work their way up. The professional operatives and politicians who make it to the top have bested countless competitors to get there. These people are seasoned with decades of practice and very, very good at what they do.

{not an expedite but trucking}: Florida 41 foot spread law came into effect this year.
A.Z flapping mudflaps law{no more then 8" off the road @ all times}, (still scratching my head how are we supposed to pretrip this one LoL...)
B.C automatic lift axle law.

to name a few...
