Since we are not yet back to work and hunting season is for the most part over, I have turned to fishing. Yesterdays score, 14 trout between 1-4lbs. 12 rainbows and 2 browns. No brookies or steelhead. Not a bad day. All released. Layoutshooter

I like fishing. I'm not sure what you call my reel but it's the kind where the line goes back and forth from side to side and you see all the line in the reel. I have about a 2oz weight on the end so it will zing out pretty far. I like to either see how far it can go or else how close to the same spot each cast and then just slowly reel it in. After a few hours of that relaxing then it's off to Red Lobster to enjoy somebody else's catching.

No, no pics, sorry. Just come up here sometime when I am home and I will make sure you get some of the same action. By all normal standards it was a slow day where we were fishing. You have a bait casting reel Leo. Way too much weight for what we were doing. You need a 9-11' spinning rod rated for 4-8lb line. We use 4' long fluorol-carbon leaders with a 4.5gm clear float with a floresant orange top. About 1gm of weight spread out between the float and hook. We had wax worms, spawn bags and nightcrawlers for bait. I was fishing with a young gentleman, 2nd year law student, he used to work for me 4 years ago when I was the fishing department manager at a Gander Mountain in Taylor MI. We still talk every few months or so. It was the first time we were able to fish together. It was a real treat!!! It is nice to know a young man like him, hard working, polite and so far, sucessful. I know he will go far. Great fisherman too. Layoutshooter

All released? Are you some kind of communist or just freaking nuts. There are people by the thousands starving in Detroit. They are forced to buy Doritos, Swanson hungry Man Dinners, Spam and Fruity Pebbles with their food stamps. All the while you are tossing high protein delicacies back into the water just so some other sportsman can enjoy catching them again.

I spent 2 weeks backpacking in the Wind River Mountain Range in Wyoming. Caught a lot of small cut throat trout. Ate a lot of small cut throat. Can't remember throwing any back. Never had to eat pine cones or my companions.

Waste not, want not. You are what you eat. A trout in the hand is worth a half dozen in the bush.

No, I am not a commie!! I released them because I wanted to save them for the starving Dorito munching garden slugs in Detroit. Give a Person (man, but I have to be PC in todays world) a fish and they will eat for a day, teach a person (man) to fish and they will eat for a lifetime. The Omega 3 fatty acids in the trout will help counter-act the LDL caused by the Doritos they were forced to eat. Besides, I don't really like trout all that much, they are just fun to catch. Besides, the trout were not in the bushes, the bottom was mostly sand and small rock. They also were not in my hand for the most part. I used hemostats to pull the hooks without touching them so as not to remove the protective slime coat. Do you need some trout Moot? I can tell you were that stream is. There are zillions of them in there. Even total rookies could catch one or two in there. If you know what you are doing you could catch a lot. Layoutshooter

Ah, you see there's the problem (not my problem, just the problem). I don't use bait. Bait isn't for fishing. Bait is for catching. I fish. I don't catch. That's why I use the heavy lead weight. Gives more distance capability to my fishing. :D

ever try the barbless hooks? or just file the barb down abit...makes landing them that more skilled somewhat...especially with the small and largemouth bass...they tend to swallow hooks...

Nah, I don't want any hooks, just my lead weight for distance. It would take away some of the relaxation effect if I had any sort of hook.

It has been years since I've eaten trout. Pan fried over a campfire, crispy skin, yummy! Of course everything tastes better cooked over a fire.

I would gladly send you some northern pike slime for coating the trout you release. A little dab and they're good to go.

When it comes to eating fish, I'm a walleye guy. Fried, broiled or grilled. Ever had eel pout? Some parts are edible!

I often use barbless hooks. They are not really needed for this type of fishing since most of the fish are hooked in the top of the lip. Just lift the line, slip in the hemostat and pop the hook out. I understand you Leo, sometimes I fish like you do. This time I was "Catching". I do enjoy both. Layoutshooter

I'm holding out for some ice on Lake Erie. Early to mid February. I enjoy dropping a line in a hole in the ice and pulling out 2 perch at a time! C'mon Ice!!!

You live right in my backyard!! AnneM. Ice on this end of the Lake comes on late and leaves early. I was fishing in Ohio the other day. I fished Cold Creek near Sandusky. Good luck on the ice. I wish I could join you but I really do need to get some money coming in. Layoutshooter

I just need to correct you on this quote. It should be, give a man a fish and you feed him for a day. Teach a man to fish and he'll spend all his time in a boat drinking beer.

AH, the old beer in the boat trick. Sounds like catfishin to me. Walleye and perch are my favorite, along with some cold water bluegills. I will do that Anne, you all get a bit more ice around Put-in-Bay than we do up here. We used to get good ice on Brest Bay when I was a kid, then they built that nuke plant and the water is a bit warmer now. Layoutshooter

Another good place to go is Camp Perry o Rt. 2. The ice forms early there and it's great fishing!!

No boat required to ice fish. Just string up your beers and drop them in the hole! Ice cold!
