A 375 lb marlin. It was my first deep sea fishing trip, some 20 odd years ago. I caught it off the coast of Acapulco, Mexico where I was on vacation. Bait was small fish baited to look like they were swimming. The boat was a four place outrigged local coastal fishing boat. Not a big game fish boat. It was a thrill that kept me hooked on deep sea fishing til this day. The guy next to me,who I had never met til that morning boarding the boat, caught a 9 foot sailfish, two hours before I hooked my marlin, and he was rubbing it in bigtime. He was one of those guys that kept bugging me with comments like "Want me to show you the ropes sonny?" Mine went 10´ 8¨, which shut him down and made him eat his words, which made it doubly sweet. I remember asking him as we were bringing my big catch in, if he could move his minnow over and make room on the deck. I have never caught anything like it since then, though I still deep sea fish every chance I get.I had to leave the marlin hanging on the dock for the locals to eat, as in those days I didn´t have enough money to have it mounted, which I always regretted, but I was young and just starting out careerwise. All I ended up with was a memory and a picture, and a whopper fish tale that I must confess few people til this day believed, till they see the picture, as I am not only posing on the dock with the fish, but have shots of me reeling him in and helping to gaff him on board. Took a few hours, but I had the endurance and the strength back then.
