Top Loaded Milage Per Month for Landstar?

I would like to hear from some veteran Landstar teams as to what has been your highest paid miles month with Landstar, what time of the year that was and how recently, and then what is your average. My wife and I are in line haul trucking now and are considering switching over. Just want to count the cost and weigh the expected revenue against the financial commitment. This would be very helpful.
Thanks, Joe.

Sorry. I didn't realize that would be such an intrusive question.

It really isn't but many won't be that forthcoming with exact information. Alot of other factors come into play for that number to have any real value anyways. Numbers for a new person, might be considerably different from a veteran there. Additionally, they don't have the same fleet numbers of several years ago so there is a smaller pool of people to respond to your answer. I would search the archives here and see what comes up. I know they were busy during the huricanne season, but haven't really seen too many posts after that, so I'm not sure how they are performing now. We have brokered a handful of their loads, but not enough you could draw any conclusion from it.

Well, maybe stick around and read some of the past years worth of threads, become involved on this site. You can tell us about your history, and then people might get a little more comfortable with sharing thier personal information with you. But to come out and ask people's income within the first two or three lines of your first post is a little much. So with that said introduce yourself, my name is Jim, and I have been sober now for four days.

OK thanks, let me approach this a little differently. My name is Joe and my wife Julie and I went to truck school this past fall for CR England to do line haul trucking for the six months experience required to enter expediting. We're approaching the end of that term and are trying to count the cost on making the transition over to expediting. We like the idea of no forced dispatch and taking yourself out of service when you like - hence Landstar. We have been in ministry and would like not only the income but a means to travel and visit churches scattered loosely around the country.

Let me ask the question this way: can we expect to make the revenue to cover the cost of (a new?) truck and the diesel to profit 4-5k per month? We're used to running hard with England, about 20000 miles per month. If we could get 10000 miles per month with Landstar for $1.31 per mile, I think we could make it.

Any help from a veteran perspective would be most appreciated.

You didn't say if you're planning on a t/t or straight. Either way, you should be able to meet your goals, depending on how much time you want to put in the truck. With a team, you should far exceed those goals, tho some months may be a little short. Also, with Landstar, you may be a little slow until you get up to speed with their system. I've heard this from a number of contractors with them. Good luck!

Someone from Landstar will hopefully pop in soon, but as I understand it, it is not so much of a rate per mile, as it is a percentage of the charges, which of course are based on a rate per mile as well as other factors. Landstar operates by a group of independent agents rather than a centralized dispatch, as most other companies have Many time I have heard on here that it really takes about six months to really learn their system and to get to know the agents by calling them. It's a different approach in the business, but it seems that their O/Os can't say enough good things about them.

Definitely search the archives for posts as you will learn alot about how they operate.

Hi Joe,

My wife and I came into expediting for similar reasons as yours. In 2006 we put 121117 miles on our truck ... that's total miles including personal miles. I keep stats on the pay per mile for loads including dead-head, but I also keep overall numbers that include all truck miles including personal. In 2006 we averaged $1.37 per mile for all miles put on the truck ... DH, empty move, personal, etc. We're owners of a straight truck leased to Panther in their Elite division.

Solo here at the STAR and yes you can. I would not buy a new trk from the get go, but others will chime in on that. Lots of factors to consider, but if you want to hustle, this is the place. You should average north of $1.50 per loaded mile, deadhead and other miles are up to you. Would highly suggest a liftgate, apu, straps, pads, etc.. Make yourself available for all loads and learn the lanes. Since you said team, get a trk with room and horsepower, be comfortable. I will repond to your emails/questions, but all my time at express has been in a d unit. Good luck

Thanks. I'm encouraged. And hope to build a relationship here with you on this forum. We're taking a break from trucking the month of May for ministry reasons and then lack a short time making the six months so we'll be back at it for a while line hauling; and maybe a while longer depending how much down payment we'll have to come up with for a truck. Still have to determine what's right for us in that direction.

small world.....

Thought I would go ahead and post on this thread because I think it's pretty unique.

I had read the original post and since my wife and I are with Landstar thought I would send a private message to the writer.

We had completed a run to Smyrma, TN then went to a truck stop to do a few things and take a nap. I got on the computer and actually started to work on the message I was talking about above. After writing a few words, I decided that I wanted to check on a couple of things first, in order to give better information, so I just decided to stop and do the message later.

After about ten minutes someone was knocking on our door. The man said, "My wife and I drive for C.R. England and we were thinking about going into expediting. I was wondering if i could ask a few questions."

After my wife talked a little, I thought, hmmmmm

"You don't happen to be Joe and Julie do you?" (see name on original post)

Well, anyway, It was indeed Joe and Julie. As I said, small world... We had a nice chat, exchanged phone numbers, email addresses etc.

Wish we could have had a longer visit. They are great people. But, we had to go to Birmingham to pick up a load going to Three Mile Island in PA.

Ran the load, then back to Indianapolis to be with some of the grandkids for Easter.

As a side note, In case the Three Mile Island sounds familiar, yeah it's the place you are thinking about. Hope our truck doesn't glow in the dark. LOL

joeandjulie81 sure have proved their point they are really trying to do their home work. Great that they have met someone on EO that was all ready familiar with questions they where asking. I am sure you will be a great help to them in their endeavors. Just goes to prove once again how many people are helped by EO and the network of companies and drivers involved.
