I'm looking into getting started in a cargo van.Can anyone give me a ballpark on how long you stay out at a time? And whom decides how long you can stay out,or going home for a couple of days. Thanks for your time.

You choose your runs, time out, dinner stops etc. all on your own if you own your own vehicle. If you run for an O/O they will have some input in runs and time out. You'll still be responsible for everything else. The longer you stay out the more potential you have. If your home is a mile off 75 in Lima then you may go home fairly often, provided you stay available and are not out of service. If your home is in Texas you won't get home as often. If your priority is home time this may not be the field for you. If your priority is being your own boss and the potential for a good living it may be a good choice. Good luck.

I agree, you make the calls on your income, time off, etc. In general, loads are more easily available the last of the month and the first of the month is a bit slower. So I would recommend staying out as long as your staying loaded. I always tell operators you don't break the flow when your running hot. Hope this makes sense. Good luck.

The first two answers you got are right on. I will build on the When freight is Hot stay out. My drivers stay out and are actually out right now. They decided they wanted to stay out through Thanksgiving. The trucks ran up through the night of Thanksgiving and they have now been down since then. They made that choice because each time they go home or shut down for whatever reason there does seem to be a start up curve and they did not want to go through that coming out of Thanksgiving. Time has shown them this is the way to handle it. LDB hit the nail on the head with the example of where you live. I have a driver that lives smack dab in the middle of our freight area and when he does go home he can usally do it at the end of a run and he can get freight pretty quickly coming out of the house. The bottom line is if you own your van you simply make the call. If you want to go home for a day or a week that is your decision. My though is just flat out stay out as long as you can handle it. This is somewhat easier in a bigger truck where you have a sleeper, TV, and other items. I am guessing you may not be as compfy in a van but I don't know that. Only you know for sure. Good Luck with whatever you do.

I call my shots in the spring and summer I come home most weekends loaded or not Since I'm invloved with the Christian Motorcycle Association. So this time I use to ride.Once riding season is over I stay out as longer most times 3 weeks then home for 2 or 3 days.
