Thompson makes his announcement

A Thompson/Gingrich ticket? Newt was the only Republican he mentioned by name on the Tonight show. I'm not ready to make final judgment on Thompson yet, but I think I'm going to end up liking him. I like politicians that can, at least, sound like they're speaking from the heart about their core values, as opposed to someone like, oh, let's say Hilary, who just can't seem to avoid sounding like she's pandering to whatever audience she's standing in front of at the moment. The guy who sounds like he's sticking to his values might be doing just that.

Some how I don't see Newt running at all. He needed to get into this early and make a name for himself - Thompson didn't have to do that with Turner running reruns of Law and Order, Hunt for Red October and a bunch of other things he has been in.

After last night, I really think that Thompson maybe the dark house runner in the race and may just squeeze by Rudy but passing everyone else. He has more exposure than all of them except rudy is following close behind.

The other thing I am really puzzled by is the idea that we need debates, no one really is serious about basing their vote on that staged cr*p, are they?

I mean Glenn Beck made the comment first and it has been followed up by others that if the repubs really want to make a real impact, then what they need to do is first have a discussion in a relaxed environment like a small room with 4 cameras where there is no moderators and let them openly discuss issues that we face. The second part of this are a few get togethers' where there is no selection process for the common people can ask common questions - first come first served thing. I think these two things would be the most effective way to get their message out and shows that the party and the candidates are unified in some way, not like the dems.

Yeah, you guys are probably right about Newt. It would be an attractive ticket to those wanting to back away from the middle.

I think Newt would take VP, simply because he's doing nothing now. Greg... what did Cheney have to do to be VP? Nada... just be picked. Same with Newt. I'd be thrilled to have a Constitutionalist as VP. Not to mention, he'd get a lot of exposure if he decided to run for Pres.

I think they have to do the debates this way, because the loud mouths would hog it all if things weren't structured. They do serve a purpose, if nothing else just to show wit and speaking skills.

As far as Thompson goes, I'm all for him. He's not the MOST conservative, yet he doesn't seem to be a pork barrel neo-con or RHINO. I think, with time, he'll get the debate thing down and look very appealing to those not familiar with him.

By the way... Michael Reagan doesn't like him. "Who has he helped get elected? What has he done for the party?" Sorry bud... to me, this is about America, not the elephants.

the problem is exposure, he (Newt) was a minor figure to the public 14 years ago (the world did not stop when he left office) and now he is almost none existent in the public's eye. Things have changed, he will have to mend fences much more than anyone in the field right now and the libs, with the media would have a great time tearing him apart - which means people will get tire of him quickly.

But the other issue for me at least is Oprah and her need to step in and help Obama. Obama hasn't done a thing as senator at this point and truthfully I find the comparison between JFK and Obama rather distasteful and misplaced.

The Oprah endorsement isn't surprising at all. It would have been surprising the other way around.

Are there actually people who would walk into the polling booth thinking, "What would Oprah do?" C'mon...

Being speaker of the House and a key player in the Contract with America was hardly a minor role. But, he has been out of the limelight and the publics memory can be short. I can see where he may be a guy with an all or nothing ego. But, if he chooses to look 4 or 8 years ahead and sees Thompson as a guy whose beliefs closely reflect his, and I think they do, you never know. Mary Matalin described Thompson as a "consistant conservative", which is how I see the guy.

The only thing I can add to the discussion is this. One attribute of a good VP would be his/her familiarity with congress. Newt would fit that bill. Although, as stated earlier things have changed a bit since he was a public figure. But, the process and establishment hasnt changed much if any. Just new issues and faces.

And how bout the fact Newt admitted to having an affair all while trying to impeach Clinton on the Monica deal. He's got dirty laundry...

Newt who?

He should have been working up to the primaries in 2006 not the end of 2007. Many would not want him in politics in the party, he is a 'none person' now.

"Mary Matalin described Thompson as a "consistant conservative", which is how I see the guy."

Matalin 'hasbeen' also become a has been with her husband. One thing that many point out is her absence from the scene and popping into the shows that her friends host. The sad thing is that both parties have no visible strategist like the previous elections.

I guess "her friends" have her on so she can talk about her recipe for meatloaf. Newt has not been turned into a dolphin, an eagle, a lion, a bear(hey, it's Sunday and it's football season), or anything other than a human. So he is, indeed, a person. They are asked to speak on things political because they are still connected and have valid points of view, even though they don't have the jobs they used to.
