Scary only in the sense that they will be stronger competitors for the available jobs. That of course is, if all this is true in the future.

I find it scary because we have lost our understanding that education is about learning, not social engineering or unions.

These countries mentioned, India and China don't flourish just because of their education system but because of their language. The complexity of the language is a key to how they look at things and how they can achieve higher knowledge than our students.

But again maybe I am wrong, maybe going to public school and learning that the answer of 2+2 doesn't really matter in the bigger picture of things but how the answer effects the other students who think that 2+2 equals 5

One of the reasons our students do so poorly in competition with the rest of the world is the way we educate here. I can only use England as an example but I understand that it is similar in many other countries.

Here we teach a more rounded style of education, even at the college level. An engineering student in England will not study history or anything else not connected to egineering. That is the same with math.

That system has pluses and minisus. While they might excell at that one subject they almost never can work outside that area. I have seen it in action. For testing to be of real value you would have to test the British engineering student on all of the subjects we require our students to learn. You would be surpised with the results.

We need to improve our education system of that there is no doubt. The first step would be to RAISE all standards for graduation. The next, just teach things. The classrooms should not be used for social engineering. Finally, get the Federal Government OUT of education. They have NO business being involed in what is a local responsibilty.

I think the problem with americans and education is they can't stay focused.Perfect example would be any thread on EO.Go ahead check it out, most any thread you read is off point by the 6th or 7th post, unless it gives people an oppertunity to down one another as the smokeing thread did and they stayed on point for 5,count them 5 pages.
