On this day in 1945, at 8:16 a.m. Japanese time, an American B-29 bomber, the Enola Gay, drops the world's first atom bomb, over the city of Hiroshima. Approximately 80,000 people are killed as a direct result of the blast, and another 35,000 are injured. At least another 60,000 would be dead by the end of the year from the effects of the fallout.

As bad as it seems, the bomb did save a lot more lives. It was estimated that over 1 million American and Japanese lives would have been lost if we invaded Japan. My father served in WWII and chances are he may have been sent from Europe to Japan if the war had continued. Thank God we have never( and no other country has ever) used the bomb since. As President Kennedy once said "Those who don't remember history, are condemned to repeat it." May we never forget!
