The Worst Road Contest...

Having just bought a set of new Goodyear's and spent money for a front end alignment, I was less than pleased to have to make 3 round trips in 3 days to Detroit airport, from Toronto. The condition of the roads in the Detroit area, especially I 94 east bound, is a disgrace. I now open the Worst Road Contest, all contributions are welcome. Simply name your selection for the Worst Road. It may be an interstate, a rural route, or it could even be a city street, but you have to tell us where it is, what it's name is
and exactly why you have decided it is THE WORST ROAD !!!

Thanks to all, and have fun with this idea. Don't be afraid to name names, and tell us how your REALLY FEEL. Jim Bunting...

I think the worst roads in America are:

1. Almost any road in Michigan
2. GW Bridge and exchange in NY,NY
3. 401 Between Windsor and Chatham, Ontario

Don't believe I've ever seen a worse stretch than Pennsylvania, [Metro Detroit], east of 275. Or Eureka, which bounced my microwave off the floor [at half the speed limit]! It's been resurfaced, wonder how long it'll stay nice - I don't think Michigan uses good quality materials on road projects, because no other state has [or needs] frost laws, that I know of.

Most northern tier states have seasonal load restrictions in the spring for certain roads. I know Minnesota, the Dakotas, Montana, Iowa, Wisconsin and Michigan do. I would guess New York and the Northeast also restrictions.

Being in a cargo van I don't pay attention to seasonal road restrictions. In Minnesota the jurisdiction that maintains the roadway has the authority to limit weights. MNDOT maintains state and federal roads, the counties their roads, municipalities theirs...

I'm told Michigan is voting today May 5th to increase the state sales tax 1 percent with proceeds going to road improvements and related expenses. I'm also told the citizens aren't too crazy about the idea. No predictions.

It's a lousy idea. The proposal needs to fail!
