The secret to getting rid of crabgrass

Years ago I had a summer job at a city park. The place was very nice and the lawns there were beautiful. One of my tasks at this job was to spread new grass seed once a week on these very beautiful lawns. The reason for this was puzzling to me so one day I asked the maintainence chief why they did this. He asked me if I noticed that there were very few if any weeds or crabgrass in the park. I acknowledged that I did.
He went on to explain that the best deterent or "cure" for crabgrass and other weeds is the constant replacement of bad seed with fresh high quality grass seed. The high quality seed overtakes the bad and the result is a plush, green, beautiful lawn.
I have recently taken up the belief that this works in Forums such as the Soapbox as well. Thanks Greg and Tallcal for coming back and spreading some fresh, quality seed.

Very good post LetzRock... and could be applied to so many areas.

Thanks for posting this, and reminding me that the way to overcome negativity is to flood it with good stuff!

I would plow it under and cover with weed block and spray with princept 80 then cover with a rock garden. :D

Could be used on the soapbox also.

I, on the other hand would grow the crabgrass. It is more drought resistant, it needs mowing far less often, you don't have to use crabgrass killer to kill it then and there is no need for chemical fertilizers. It is better for the environment!! :D Layoutshooter

Maybe that works in some ideal place where there's someone to provide seed, water and fertilizer all the time. Try that in a harsh environment where it gets hot and dry and all you'll have is a bunch of grateful birds that fed on the seed that somebody else provided and the same amount of crabgrass. Crabgrass is hardy, drought resistant and can survive in spite of a difficult environment. On the Darwinian scale, it is a superior type of life form. The lovely fescue, on the other hand, needs continual artificial nurture and replacement from a benefactor in order to exist. Kind of like socialism vs. conservatism. One depends on the resources of others in order to grow and thrive - the other's survival is based on the individual liberty to grow and develop on its own, in spite of its environment.

I beg to differ Mr. Pilgrim. Both Socialism and Conservatism depend on others. Socialists dump their money in the government's pot and then depend on them to provide the services they need. Conservatives buy what they need on the free market, but they still depend on those service providers to provide it. No man is an island, but thanks for your glowing glass is half full commentary.

Well said. I guess another analogy would have been Zoysia grass, but it needs to be planted by others to get a start and must have a lot of sunshine to thrive. Crabgrass springs up anywhere and everywhere on it's own. I'll stop with the vegetation allegories while I'm ahead.

Fresh quality seed also requires some "fertilizer" in moderate doses!

Crabgrass is one of God's creations. Be afraid. Be very afraid.

Please explain. Are we the spawn of some primordial soup?

Could be. To be primordial though would infer that the soup was the beginning. Since this would not be possible as someone or something would have had to make it, I might lean more toward a big bang.

Big bang? What caused this big bang and what blew up originally?

Mr. Flat Top,
If I were smart enough to know the answer to that I would likely be doing something more constructive than posting nonsense on EO.

That road sign brings back memories - I used to have some friends that lived in Cool Ridge, WV not far from that exit.
