The plan for November 17th was to hunt till 10AM, pull our tree stands out of the trees and be back at the motel to watch the Michigan/Iowa game then hunt the evening.
The day dawned cool and clear. The woods were quiet, again. I had not seen a deer, not one, the first two days of the season. Sammy, a 88 year old WWII vet had taken a spike on first day. My Dad had not had a shot and my brother had passed on some small deer.
I was watching several black squirrels playing around, chasing each other when I heard a MAJOR racket. I picked up my gun and got ready, just in case it was a deer. It was 0730.
All of a sudden there were deer EVERYWHERE! I counted 15 and there could have been more. I did a quick scan of the herd and saw no deer with headgear. I picked out the biggest doe, about 75 yards out, put the cross hairs on her left front shoulder, and touched off the shot. She dropped in a heap. A PERFECT shot.
At the sound of the shot ANOTHER herd, that I had not seen, took off from about 200 yards out. Tails everywhere. I counted six. There could have been more.
I sat in the tree for an hour or so, hoping for a buck to come by but none did.
Then about 9AM I saw two "backs" out in front of me. Never got a good look at them but they headed down behind me, towards my brother. About 10 minutes later, POW! My brother dropped one of the two does that had just left me earlier.
We took our tree stands down, dropped the deer at the processing place and was back at the motel at 1140, just in time for the kick off of the Michigan game.
As if to top off what was a wonderful morning. Michigan won!
