I have received responses by mail from the White House, governor's mansion, senator's office and congressman's office. With my state rep I have gotten a few minutes of face time whenever I show up at his office, albeit perhaps after waiting half a day for him to get out of a committee meeting. I'm sure if I wrote I'd get a response but I prefer face time. I don't think I could get that with anyone in Washington and it's too expensive to go anyway. The results aren't always what I want but I do get a response thanking me for my interest and an assurance they'll be involved in whatever the issue is, whether on my side or not.

It is a lot easier to get in touch with your representative, most of the time you will get a response but sometimes if it is a major issue, you may not get a response.

As for me, I have talked to, met and presented different things to politicians with both negative and positive results.

and can say people need to get involved and stop depending on others.

I have written several letters, and my reps here in Ohio have been real good about writing back. I'm sure sometimes it's a staffer, but the letters usually do address the exact issue I asked about, not just a standard "Hey, thanks for writing, your opinion is important!"

I have also read, and seen reports, that if you vote, you are more likely to get a reply. Some, not all, offices check and see if the writer is registered, and if they actually vote. If you vote regularly, and care enough to write a letter , they figure you are serious enough to stay involved in the issue, and tell others.
