The Media and Others are Missing the Point

After the Iowa GOP Lincoln Dinner, where 13 GOP primary candidates spoke, we were treated to the usual political reports and commentary. Depending on the reporter or commentator, we heard about what's wrong with Trump, what's wrong with the other candidates who are not criticizing Trump, what's wrong with Biden and the Democrats, what's wrong with the Republican Party, etc.

We also heard how Trump's support in the GOP is far and away stronger than the other candidates, and how if that support is moving it's getting even stronger.

The candidates are frustrated because they can't seem to slow or reverse Trump's momentum. A good number of Republicans are frustrated because they don't think Trump can win the general election but his base support is steadfast. The anti-Trump media is frustrated because the world seems to be turned on its head. An indictment used to be bad news for a candidate. For Trump, it energizes his base and increases their number.

I'm beginning to think a new question needs to be widely asked and discussed. Instead of asking what's wrong with Trump, Biden, other candidates, and the GOP, maybe we should ask, "what's right with Trump's base?"

Very few commentators say much about the base, except to say it remains steadfastly supportive of Trump. Then they go into the horse-race figures (candidates) to talk about those. Trump would be nothing without his base. So, maybe we should ask what's right about them? There are MILLIONS of them, and they are Americans who vote.

Clearly, they are rallying around Trump. But why? Is it simply because they like how Trump insults powerful people? I have to think there is more to it than that.

What are these millions of Trump supporters getting right about America? What is the glue that holds them together, such that they look on Trump as a hero, despite his illegal activity, crass ways and many other flaws?

What's right about the Trump base? What are they getting right about America that others are missing?

Right, during the Trump presidency, it was a prosperous time. Lower taxes, higher wages. Low gas prices. Inflation was low. Securing the border. The virus came and Dems politicized it, like they did the Russia collusion hoax. The Dems only game is try to make people hate Trump.

For anyone sincerely interested in why Trump got nominated in the first place and consequently elected, I highly recommend The Case For Trump by Victor Davis Hanson. This is not a screed singing praises to Trump, but a thesis explaining why so many Americans embraced him almost as soon as he was nominated. It was written late in his presidency, but it offers an excellent insight into the mind of the Trump voter and the shortcomings of the GOP that likely holds true to this day.

I downloaded the Amazon sample today to see if I want to read the whole book. Thank you for the recommendation, and especially for recommending "not a screed singing praises to Trump."
