The Glory

Every so often a mere man is offered the opportunity to witness the glory of Nature. I was afforded that chance today.

I was hunting out on Lake Erie when the first of the migration showed up. First just a few hundred birds at a time, then thousands. The started at around 11AM and never stopped. They just poured in from the North. When the day started there were only a few thousand birds on the Lake. By night fall there was 50 thousand, or more. The first Tundra Swans showed up as well. None there at daybreak, a thousand or so by noon.

It was truly a blessed day. It was not a TV special. It was not a picture in a book. I saw it, with my own two eyes. Enjoyed the sights and sounds with GOOD FIENDS. It was a wonder day to be alive.

That makes a good day. Some hunt for years and never see it happening, let alone birds dropping in you lap long after the limits are reached but ya just cant make yourself p-up and go home. Ya gotta stay and just watch it.

We did not take a lot of birds today. When 'green birds' come in they head out onto the Lake first. They then start working their way in shore and up River over the next few days.

It is the swans that are the most amazing. You can hear their wing beats from 1/2 mile out. They NEVER shut up! Hooting non stop. They are MASSIVE birds. They were coming into the area 20-50 at a pop. They will remain all winter unless frozen out.

I also have a flight of "cans" come over the layout. They circled high, twice, then headed up River.

ONE more day to hunt, tomorrow, then it's over for me. Hate to see it end. Got room in the morning! Come on out!

No problem. We did not go. We did not have enough guys to go out. Maybe we can get out during the Dec 4 day season. There will likely be several zillion ducks here at that time.
