I agree Cheri-
One does not have to be a rocket scientist to determine the need to lay over in the safest environments possible. If possible, we don’t spend a lot of layover time at truck stops but sometimes the “50 mile rule express center†requirements dictate that we do stay at them. ATeam, on the other hand, has the “ride with creature comforts†AND the luxury of staying where ever he so chooses because:
=========================================
ATeam Quote: When we position ourselves for freight, we give very little consideration to how far or close to an express center we are. Dispatch can see all trucks at all times, even if they are out of service. It is not uncommon for them to call us for a load that would require us to drive through several express centers to pick up. Such calls come in even if we are out of service. If they need you, they will find you.
=========================================
In addition, having the “ride with creature comforts built in†doesn’t necessary remove any criminal element in fact, it has been our experience, (speaking from someone having “the ride with comforts built inâ€); we seem to be no less safe in many truck stop environments. Usually, the good truckers seem to out number the bad even in the seediest of environments. We have found that many “big truck†drivers are more curious about our truck than anything else. As a matter of fact, we just got a covenanted parking place here at a truck stop in Phoenix, AZ just for showing a curious “big rig†driver what the inside of our sleeper looked like.
Normally, if we knew we were going to be in Phoenix for this long, we probably would have went to an RV camp ground to layover, but most of them are on the outer limits of actual city of Phoenix. HOWEVER, because on Friday we were told we were the number one D truck here AND we knew a D load was coming out of here that afternoon… we elected to stay well within the 50 mile radius of the Phoenix to ensure we would remain the number one team and not be overlooked because of proximity to the load. (Thus, we would have the most dwell time and be selected)
I don’t think that ATeam realizes we have to stay within the bounds of dispatch criteria, as we don’t have the luxury of being pre-dispatched like he has professed in prior posts. Being pre-dispatched consistently could feasibly lessen a truck’s possible crime predisposition as then trucks would be able to select where they would like to lay over for their comfort/safety and not for FedEx’s dispatch criterion. Pre-dispatches for days ahead of time like he has stated openly he receives would be particularly nice as we could plan mini vacations all over the country without EVER worrying about staying at a truck stop!
