Surface Rust on Wheels

Hello Everyone,

I wanted to know what everyone does with surface rust on their wheels.

Is there a way to get it off? Is it possible to repaint it (how expensive), or just to replace?

Thanks in advance!

Option 1: Hand sand the rust and then have the wheels painted by a pro using quality paint.

Option 2: Buy new wheels.

Option 3: Hand sand the rust, paint the wheels yourself with canned spray paint and then cover up the mess with these: Hubcap Haven: IMP-50x GMC/Chevy 16 Inch Plastic Chrome Wheel Hubcaps/Simulators

Personally I'd go with option 3. I don't have these on my van, but did have factory plastic covers on a Ranger pickup. They look good, are easy to clean and are cheap. The above link is the first place I came across doing a Google search. I have never done business with them. J.C. Whitney sells wheel covers as does Auto Barn. I like Auto Barn and they usually have better prices than Whitney. Do some research. Good luck and report back!

Well I drive a ST and was getting spots of rust on my wheels and what I did was 1st use a rust remover (cheap and at Wal-mart)...this took some time and didn't work as well as I'd hoped so I used an all purpose cleaner (crud cutter or 409 should work) called Crown cleaner (and it's not made to clean crowns or at least it doesn't say it does)

Anyway I sprayed the wheel down and ever so lightly scrubbed it with extra fine steel wool until I thought it was what I wanted and then rinsed off the wheel 2-3 times....let the wheel dry completely then clear coated the wheel.

no need to mask anything off and they looked pretty good.

sorry about the over explaining...just trying to reduce the picking apart of what I was trying to explain.

hope it helps!

Thank You for that. I will pass these instructions on and see if we can get some of our rust off with this method.

If you have rust coming from nuts your wheel IS LOOSE !
Have the wheel and studs checked by a professional.
Rusty nuts are nothing to play around with.

I would recomend hitting bone yard, or if your running a strait truck a truck tire distributor and ask for a set of recon buds make sure they have been inspected and or trued especialy steers.
usualy painted white 30 - 50 bucks each and they look good.
Or if you want somthing that is yours pick up a set of gently used or new rims and have them powder coated you can custom collor them. Im planning on having a set of 22.5" steers done this summer and Ive priced out a couple coating shops in western NY and Ive been quoted betwene 50 and 75 bucks each Ill have to remove the paint so they can prep them. Best part is the powder coat lasts forever or at least several years. Just make sure the mechanic dosent gouge the coating when you have the tires changed.

Chrome cleaner is really good for removing rust stains on the painted surface.
Of course it wont remove the rust coming thru the steel. I also think Powder coating is best option at this point if you want to save what ya have now. It will last so much better then a can of spray paint and look way better.
