I like the 'sound off' question. Should parents have the right to control their children's education, to include what classes they take, or does the 'state' have control overall aspects children's education?

Religious studies, which is comparative religions, is not really all that different from history or social studies. But, "They claimed the class violated their freedom of religion by forcing their children to be exposed to religious beliefs that were different from the family's," is very telling, and consistent with many religious folks, where the more religious they are, they less tolerant they are to outside ideas - the more close-minded they are. Outside ideas, especially conflicting ones, might poison the indoctrination, and might allow people including children to think for themselves. That's a bad thing to many religions.

All true of course, but, who decides what children should be taught? The 'State', like Sweden does? The parents? Should the government even be involved in education? Seems like government involvement in education is more than open to abuse of power on their part.

Some of us are Canadian. The Internet is not a country. It's also interesting to see how certain issues are handled in other countries. It also afford some people the opportunity to rag on government involvement in anything. In addition, it provides valuable page hits.

There are a lot of similarities between the Can. and US constitutions....
Then one must understand how some QCers think...the majority are Catholic...there is no better religion inthe world in their mind....and they will fight to keep any other variations out of their lives...Quebec is to Canada as California is to the US....a pain in the neck...

Well I guess no one sees the point ...

Not a lot of similarities from reading both constitutions, the concepts are different, the ideology is different and the language is not right :) beside there is something that I don't see in our system, a comment made by the courts about some unwritten things, “The Constitution is more than a written text. It embraces the entire global system of rules and principles which govern the exercise of constitutional authority. A superficial reading of selected provisions of the written constitutional enactment, without more, may be misleading.

If we look at the education systems alone, there is a lot to be desired with ours, once a parent/local centric system with little state/federal intervention and now has turned into a big clustermess with no control at the parent/local level while the Canadian system has still been consistent in producing results that compete on the world level and kick our a**.
