I can not stretch this subject enough, but my opinion is, if you are leased on to a carrier that keeps you busy and loaded at all times, than it does not matter what unit you have. If your carrier wants to convince you that you might want to switch from cargo to straight and the loads are not there, then you're screwed.
The last few month, since gas prices are so high, alot of people are selling their trucks because they can't keep up and have no loads.
Some others are booming. My own company has trucks sitting. If the connections are not there, whats the purpose then?
I myself was looking into a straight truck rather than a van a while ago, wanted to do this with a business friend, but I am glad I did not.
I can't even imagine a company is hiring for straight trucks right now. A few weeks ago I reacted on a referral to another Expedite Co., and was badly disappointed. Without telling names, they had the biggest add in the EO mag and a booth at the Expo, I have not gotten one offer so far.
I would have to hang myself by now if I had to keep up with costs.
Like I said in the beginning, it is all in the connections.

I personally take anywhere from 5 to 10 calls a day from expedite owner operators.

Without a doubt, the most successful group seems to be H/W teams in a straight truck. It almost doesn't matter what carrier they are leased with - it seems.

The next group would be single drivers in a straight truck. Followed by cargo vans.

So with my experience - the straight truck folks "generally" are the most successful.

IMHO

Lawrence is right on the money.

In addition I would like to mention the adantages of running a "C" unit.It is often said why not go ahead and get a "D" then "You can haul anything".Truth is most D`s haul 75% C loads. Many of the D loads are given to E units to keep them happy.

Sure C`s also carry B loads but for us only 1 or 2 a month.(less than 10%)

C excapes the extra fuel taxes that are charged back quarterly.

Easier unit to drive and park.I know a spouse who refused to drive any more because hubby whent out and got a D.

Now if we could only get FECC to allow us to carry a little more weight. (6K would be nice)Things would be perfect.

bought a sprinter two months ago and started running with panther, i just got back from my two week military extravaganza so i ran the van for 6 weeks and now have just over 17,000 miles on it..from monday morning to wed at 3 pm i did 1300.00 worth of business.. yes i am beat and tired.. came home because of jury selection tomorrow....remember a sprinter costs more but i have actually been paid almost straight truck prices because of the door height and a 14 ft bed. 881 miles at 1.15 a mile, and it took 16 hours to deliver...do the math and see the results...pulled into the detroiter last month and was 16th on the list.. i didnt even make it all the way out of the van and the qual-com was buzzing on a high mileage load because the pallets were to high for a regular van
