Straight Truck or Tractor/ Con-Way NOW or Landsta

I'm currently working for a contractor with FEDEX Ground and I'm looking into contracting on my own this March,2005. I'm looking at either leasing a tractor with Con-Way NOW or either a D-Unit or possilby a tractor with Landstar as a solo driver. I've concluded that a tractor would be the only way to go, solo, in regard to Con-Way NOW. I live in Fort Worth, TX. Does anyone have an opinion on either company? Would I have a "GOOD" chance of being profitable with either company regarding the type of unit that I've chosen to possibly lease on with? In regard to Landstar, would the D-Unit or tractor be better for a solo driver? I'm not interested in FEDEX Custom Critical. THANKS

Just curious, why would you want to go with Lanstar as a single Tractor/trailer? Why not just lease on with Landstar and go trucking? As a single you'll be a lot happier. I believe you should do a bit more research on expediting. This may not be your cup of tea.

My wife and I live in the east texas area and drive a team C unit on with conway and do all right. We have had some really good loads from dallas, but we have also had times were five teams sitting at the J in dallas waiting on a load and dispatch telling us all we are first on the board for the next load. Conway is doing some changes they may have the bugs worked out by march. Tractor drives i have talked with say Conway Full load is the better for tractor solo the pay is a little less per mile but more loads per week. Full load drivers have the option to run expidite freight or full load.
Good Luck where ever you choose.

Hi,

Con-Way currently pays tractors $1.05 per mile for ALL miles. In addtion, as a tractor you would be used by full load. I personally am not Con-Way's welcome wagon host nor a recruiter by any stretch....however, I have heard that being a solo driver for Con-Way is pretty decent as they are willing to transfer loads at any CCX, CSE, CWS, etc terminal.

As far as Texas...we have been back and forth from there for more than half our loads in the last two months....I am getting really tired of Texas. BUT sure do love the money... LOL

as tractor trailer operator in expedite for 20 years, its important to run team, but if you must run single, then there is but 1 company you will make a living with in expedite, thats con-way now,i run team, but i did have a truck runnning single, and she did very well.
you will have to manage your time,as expedite is running all night long,as most freight is over night delivery, and is called in, in the afternoon as freight was not picked up by original shipper
good luck,hope this is help:+
