I am wondering if anyone out there knows anything good or bad about Sterling. I saw one for sale but dont know much about them. The owner said it is a 99 Sterling Class D with 99000 miles and has a Cat 305 HP C 10 and a Eaton 9 speed trans, double bunk sleeper, 22 ft box, with dual 100 gallon fuel tanks, aluminum wheels, power windows, 3 stage jake and a whole list of other options. He said he wants 58000 for it.
It is currently signed on with Fedex and he said that it was oked for 10 years rather than the 5 year normal time frame.I am not in Expediting yet but I am looking to get into the business and have been doing my homework on the industry. I think it is a good buy if the truck really is a 10 year truck like he claims. If not I can get one of the many FL 70's floating around with less miles for the same or less money.
I purposely posted on this forum rather that the newbie area because I was hoping to get some feed back from the experienced expediters.

Thanks and drive safely

Jim

Thanks for the imput. I will be talking to him again later this week and I will ask about the warranty. He did say that the oil was changed every 12000. And he used synthetic in the engine, trans and rear. But I will double check it.

Hi Jim

I don't know anything about the Sterling, but I can tell you this. I drove a Freightliner FLD120 with aprox 450k on it when it was turned back in to the company I was driving for, and I'm now in a 2000 FL70 with about 100k on it, the big truck was in better condition. Does this Sterling have a factory sleeper or is it aftermarket. If it is aftermarket who was it made by? There are reputable sleeper manufacturers out there, and then there are the people like Alumi-Junk. Why is he selling it, is he behind in payments? Watch out for repos, and trucks that are close to being repoed, the maintanence has probably been put off.
It does sound like a nice truck.

Good luck with whatever decision you make.

Thanks for the reply Olko,
He told me that he is selling it because he is 72 yrs old and he wants to retire. I dont believe he is behind in the payments. And he did say he changed the oil every 12,000 miles.
I stoped into a sterling dealer by my house and talked with a salesman about the sleeper and he said they are not made by sterling but they are installed at the factory.
One concern of mine is the sleeper is lacking some of the options that I would like and I am not sure if I am able to customize it with the manufactures peices or not. The Sterling dealer I visited told me they could order me another sleeper how ever I wanted but I dont think I want to invest that much money.
